Is this the morning dawning, or is this your face?

And is that lightning, or your front teeth revealed in a smile?

Or has the gazelle appeared among the branches,

Or Hind's face appeared from behind a lattice?

How long, O enchantress of lovers, will you shun me?

Honor the vows, and heed the sufferer's anguish.

    Your glances have tired from the havoc they have wrought upon us;

Your eyes have left no one alive in this quarter.

If it is lawful for you to veil yourself from our eyes,

Then who, pray, gave you leave to shed lovers' blood?

    كان إدراكها من فوق إدراكي

    She was kept inviolate, veiled even from the images of fancy;

Perceiving her lay beyond my understanding.

Ah, may God bless a time that passed in those abodes,

And nothing pleased me there but you—you alone.

    How often there I spent the night watching the full moon in longing;

There was a light from your face within the full moon.

And how often I rejoiced by night, while you were unaware,

And no eye but God's was watching over you.

I let my gaze roam the garden of beauty, as

I [glorified?] Him who endowed you with wondrous beauty.

Embracing your left hand and cloaking myself in

The mantle of chastity that your right hand had woven.

I did not stretch a hand toward the kerchief at your brow,

For I feared the breaking of a telltale dawn from it.

And I did not draw the covering from the lovely breast,

Except that your breasts might testify to my purity.

And when the wind played with the robe's edges,

I kept my gaze from enjoying the sight of you.

Then I roused myself and found the light extinguished,

And the full moon cast a netlike light.

Across the brow and between the breasts it shone—

No, that was nothing but your pure radiance.

Had I not sought refuge, hidden in the darkness of your hair,

Your radiance would all but have exposed us, by God.

    I knew not what had happened—only that a sudden lapse occurred;

And after that, my mouth was kissing yours.

And before our encounter had begun, by God,

Doomsday erupted in my innermost being and yours.

But when she awoke, trembling with fear,

    Like a doe amid snares,

The robe came undone, revealing to us her spear-straight figure.

Ah, my bewilderment between one that exposes and one that slays!

Then she turned bashfully toward me, reproaching me.

I said, “Your virtues will wipe away my fault.”

She said, “Do you hope for pardon after robbing us?”

I answered her, “Forgiveness is one of your virtues.”

She said, “Do you not know a thief is bound by obligation?”

I said, “My heart's desire, glad tidings of repayment!”

She said, “And prison!” I said, “Prison is an honor to me,

If I am lodged there at the door of your dwelling.”

She said, “And fetters!” I said, “The fetter was upon my neck

When my soul became one of your captives.”

She said, “And banishment!” I said, “Separation kills me.

Far be it from you to speak of killing—far be it from you!

All torments except separation taste sweet to me,

If I endure them only to please you in some measure.

O nation of Arabs, will you not rescue a youth

Whom the eyelids of Turks are bent on killing?”

My words were scarcely finished when deliverance drew near,

And Hanna's phantom appeared, its eyes in tears.

I said, “Welcome!” She said, “Where is your pledge to me?

You traded the beauty of fidelity for the ugliness of divided devotion.

The heart is my dwelling alone; none inhabits it

But me.” I said, “And none is in the heart but you.

O soul of my life—nay, O utmost of my hope,

You are my partner in my life and possessions.

But for you, no life would please me, nor would

My eye relish sleep's sweetness, where I am blessed to meet you.”

Thus my dream ended; I awoke and did not

Gain anything but my longing for the sight of you.
