Ask the kind and tender one about my heart—may he be ransomed [reading uncertain].

And convey a greeting from a youth who keeps his pledge.

A greeting from one who longs: whenever lightning flashes,

it reminds him of those wrists and that forearm.

When the fires of your absence cut him off through estrangement,

though he had so often known safety and coolness,

he is wasted; even imagination has deserted him.

And, by God, passion has left him no resistance.

O for the master's mercy upon me—I am the one

who perishes for love of you, yet has not attained what was promised.

    Yes, no life before mine was sold for a glance;

nor will you buy a youth like me who keeps his pledge.

O my reproacher, if you were like me—long life to you—

where then would the guide be, and where the guided?

And if you are not among the youths whom passion has tamed,

then, by God, you have not attained sound judgment.

Leave me to my own affairs; I care nothing for your counsel.

For I have not found sound guidance in every counsel.

Nor is everyone who longs for the encampment a lover,

nor is every lovesick lover in love with Hind.

Nor does every stalk yield sugar,

nor has everyone who gathers flowers gathered roses.

Nor is everyone who composes poems a poet,

nor does everyone who seeks the heights attain glory.

And not every servant who professes sincere affection

for Rashid has truly become his servant.

    O my master, character is not the same in all people;

such is God's decree, which admits no reversal.

Among people is one who readily obeys his Lord's commands,

and among them one who exerts himself in disobeying Him.

When I say that I am your servant, steadfast in loyalty,

my deeds bear witness—they have become an army.

I have directed my words toward Rashid; would that I

were led to his thresholds, that I might find guidance there.

O my master, our parting was not by choice,

but time's vicissitudes revealed what they revealed.

You have gone far from your homeland, yet your abode

remains in a heart that recites your kindness as its daily litany.

    And any house in which you have dwelt is fortunate;

and happiest of God's creatures is he who has never tasted separation.

You left this land, my master, after

leaving there bounty that matched the rain and was more bountiful still.

And after your departure, the bitterness of patience has been tasted

by a humble servant who, near you, finds its bitterness honey.

And since longings surged within him and he could find no

solace, he has found no escape from remembering you.
