    Mark led their reason astray,

And they became more misguided than the Bedouins.

Refusing healing like a chronic disease.

They strayed as earlier sects had strayed,

    Among Armenians, Copts, and Syrians.

    حُزناً وفاضَ الدمعُ كالغُدرانِ

    In grief, and tears overflow like pools;

And the doves' cooing echoes in their thickets,

    Stirring sorrows and heartaches,

In grief for a people cast down by the Most High,

And therefore fallen upon their chins.

    فَقَدوا جميلَ الحُسنِ والإِحسانِ

    Goodness was wasted upon them, and their goodness was lost;

They lost the beauty of grace and beneficence.

They had been the object of glory in days past,

But became targets of abasement and abandonment.

They ruled humanity east and west by force,

    Through victory, might, and sovereignty.

The nations' communities bowed to them in reverence

For their splendor, whether far or near.

They became captives of the sons of Osman.

They were uprooted, possessed, and sold,

A bargain sale at the lowest prices.

    Their women became others', and

Their daughters were taken captive with the young men.

O community of the Romans, drunk on the wine of

Doom through ignorance, not on tavern wine!

O wine, by which minds were clouded

With pride, rising above their peers!

If you pondered this misery, there would drip

From you tears like crimson blood.

Where are the kingdoms, schools, and wisdom,

And churches and the monks' monasteries?

They became enemies, taverns, and vile ignorance,

    And mosques and animal dwellings.

Where are those nuns and monks

Who shone like stars in every place,

In Jordan's wildernesses and Scetis—that is,

    Wadi Habib in Egypt—and Pharan;

    بائيس والقسطاس مع بحرانِ

    Asla, Mizan al-Qulub, and Barti;

    Ba'is and al-Qistas, with Bahran;

From Saydan and Aliq, with Wadi Shada?

Their fragrance reached all the lands.

    And forgotten monasteries in Antioch,

Of righteous Simeon, that mountain of piety,

Whose gardens and meadows revive the heart!

O paradise, my paradise for my heart!

God bless those sanctuaries and hermit-

-ages and holy sites, where all was safety!

Destruction ravaged them, and they became barren,

    Desolate wastelands without inhabitants.

The owl hoots, thanking the evil of schis-

-m, because they have become uninhabited.

How many monasteries there were in the Romans' lands,

Of every tribe and every tongue!

Striving in pursuit of perfection, they attained it,

Each awake in the darkness amid the heedless.

They tightened their girdles upon piety's waist,

Energetic, with none among them slack.

They bound their loincloths to preserve purity,

With obedience and poverty in possessions.

These three are foundations and supports

For monastic orders, firm in their pillars.

Now they have been lost to them, until

Their monks became like soldiers on the battlefield:

Every mounted rider and hooded man

Armed with weapons, charging like horsemen.

    Including exalted bishops and metropolitans.

Because they entrenched schism, they splintered

    And dispersed like dissipating smoke.

    ففَنُوا ودونَ اللَهِ كلٌّ فانِ

    They were humbled and dwindled; their numbers shrank;

They perished, and all but God is perishing.

In Alexandria there is no longer a man

To tend God's flocks in tranquility.

Its sacraments came to them under a lease.

    They are Magians worshipping fires.

    ما ذاكَ الَّا خُدعةُ الأَعيانِ

    They lit the fire with a deceptive light;

That is nothing but the notables' deceit.

Feed it with wax and oils.

They themselves are no less misguided

Than those who hold to the worship of idols.

This is their glory in their fire; yet

It is the glory of Khosrow, master of the vaulted palace.

    Linked to Khosrow, to Anushirvan!

    Likewise Antioch mourns the splen-

-dor of her lofty radiance, exalted in rank.

Who ruled with the Bountiful One's approval.

And coercion; what I have said suffices me.

Their wealth through oppression and aggression.

Silver, for it is the cause of forgiveness.

I shed blood, not tears, from my eyelids!

They run in the arena of ambition,

    Like horses running without halters.

Said, 'My Creator afflicted me and cast me down.'

Its mother's milk—understand the heart of my meanings.

    Threatening people with ruin.

Away with the sound of third and second strings!

O you who spend the night carousing with a companion!

Is to bestow it upon young boys.

Blind in insight, leaders of the blind.

    Fasting, not self-restraint, like Satan,

These are realities, not the outlines of structures.

    O people, for whose sake

God was crucified and died a dishonored death!

    O glorious people, redeemed

With blood that healed them of the serpent's harm!

    O mighty people, chosen

Through the abundant mercy of the Creator of worlds!

Stands firm; if severed, it is reckoned perishing.

Truly, in you were fulfilled the words of Da-

-vid the prophet, with the clearest manifestation:

That wandered and strayed like a flock of sheep.

And been veiled in error and bewilderment.

    حَضَنَتهمُ في امنع الأحضانِ

    Embraced them in the most secure embrace;

She whom the Creator founded upon the

    Firm rock, steadfast in its foundations;

She whom the Lord Jesus purchased

    With his blood, not with human blood;

A virgin chosen from the nations, as

    Blessed Paul said concerning her;

She is his only dove among humanity,

    With purity and piety as her two wings;

    يُنبيكَ عنها مجمعٌ هو ثانِ

    Resplendent, catholic, and holy, as

    The second council tells you of her;

Apostolic, as her apostles make clear,

    Traveling through all the lands,

Journeying with the good news without staff or

I mean the shepherds and all the flocks.

In that see the Son fulfilled his promise—

    God's Son—when he declared openly:

'You are the Rock, and upon you I build my Church,

That its structure may be firm.'

Does the liar's heresy prevail against it.

This is he to whose command submitted

    Humanity's communities, far and near.

They entered God's religion in multitudes, without

Fear or dread of sword and spearhead.

I ask you, O my God, for a favor,

O sea of all compassion and tenderness:

That you illuminate the minds of those who became,

Through their stupidity, dark in understanding.

Forgive our striving's stumbles, and surely quench

Our burning thirst from your pouring sea.

Unite our hearts in devotion to you,

And grant us salvation and your favor.

    وانظُر اليهِ بطَرفِكَ اليَقظانِ

    Have mercy, O my Lord, upon a wretched people;

Look upon them with your watchful gaze.

Lead them from error's rugged ground to guidance,

Through the majesty of Mary, joy of the worlds,

Who rose in excellence above the summit of the heights,

    Whose soles ascended above Saturn.

To her be greetings forever, so long as

A dove warbles and sings among the branches.
