لم يَنهَضِ الثاوونَ من أَجداثِهم

ليُكذَّبَ الراوونَ فيما قد رَوَوا

ليُكذَّبَ الراوونَ فيما قد رَوَوا

Those lying buried did not rise from their graves

The dead did not rise from their graves

so that the narrators might be proved false in what they had related.

To deny what the narrators have narrated

أَخَذوا سبيلاً بالنِفاقِ واعسفوا

أَخَذوا سبيلاً بالنِفاقِ واعسفوا

بَيداءَ كل ظُلامةٍ حتى هَوَوا

بَيداءَ كل ظُلامةٍ حتى هَوَوا

They took a path of hypocrisy and wandered blindly across

They took the path of hypocrisy and were unjust

the wilderness of every injustice, until they fell.

To every darkness until they bent

قبضوا على قُضُبِ الرئاسة عَنوةً

قبضوا على قُضُبِ الرئاسة عَنوةً

قومٌ على عرش الضَلالِ قد استَوَوا

قومٌ على عرش الضَلالِ قد استَوَوا

They seized the scepters of leadership by force,

They seized the rods of leadership by force

a people who had seated themselves on the throne of error.

A people who sat on the throne of misguidance

قد أَضرَموا نارَ النِفاق فأَحدَقَت

قد أَضرَموا نارَ النِفاق فأَحدَقَت

فيهم وتلكَ القادحاتُ بها اكتَوَوا

فيهم وتلكَ القادحاتُ بها اكتَوَوا

They kindled the fire of hypocrisy, and it closed in

They ignited the fire of hypocrisy and it blazed

around them; by those sparks they were scorched.

Among them, and they got burned by those flames

قد ترضخ الأَفعى لحاويها وهم

قد ترضخ الأَفعى لحاويها وهم

لا يرضخون اذا حُوُوا مما حَوَوا

لا يرضخون اذا حُوُوا مما حَوَوا

The viper may yield to its charmer, yet they

The snake may coil up in its basket, but they

will not yield when hemmed in by what they have amassed.

Do not coil up from what they have coiled around

فَهمُ هُمُ الحَشَراتُ قد أَلِفوا الأَذى

فَهمُ هُمُ الحَشَراتُ قد أَلِفوا الأَذى

ظلموا وآووا المظلمات وما أَوَوا

ظلموا وآووا المظلمات وما أَوَوا

For they themselves are vermin, accustomed to harm.

They are the insects who have gotten used to harm

They did wrong and harbored injustices, yet showed no pity.

They oppressed and sheltered oppressions but did not shelter

سَدِروا من الجهل الفظيعِ لانهم

سَدِروا من الجهل الفظيعِ لانهم

قومٌ بحانات الضَلالةِ قد ثَوَوا

قومٌ بحانات الضَلالةِ قد ثَوَوا

They reeled from dreadful ignorance, for they are

They turned away from knowledge out of ignorance

a people who have dwelt in the taverns of error.

For they are people who have taken refuge in the taverns of misguidance

نصبوا لنا فعلَ الأَسَى وكَلامُهم

نصبوا لنا فعلَ الأَسَى وكَلامُهم

كَيٌّ وكم قلبٍ بنارهمِ كَوَوا

كَيٌّ وكم قلبٍ بنارهمِ كَوَوا

They set deeds of sorrow before us, and their speech

They prepared for us the act of harm and their words

is a searing burn—how many hearts they have seared with their fire!

Scorched many a heart with their fires

ولفيفِ جمعٍ مقرن الإِلحادِ في

ولفيفِ جمعٍ مقرن الإِلحادِ في

شرٍّ بهِ كَبِدَ الصنيعةِ قد شَوَوا

شرٍّ بهِ كَبِدَ الصنيعةِ قد شَوَوا

And a motley gathering, bound in impiety, amid

And a gang with paired disbelief

evil, with which they have roasted the liver of beneficence.

Did evil with which the hearts of the creations were seared

يتفاخرونَ بكل عَظمٍ ناخرٍ

يتفاخرونَ بكل عَظمٍ ناخرٍ

ما الفخرُ بالعظم الرميمِ ولو عَوَوا

ما الفخرُ بالعظم الرميمِ ولو عَوَوا

They boast of every rotten bone;

They boast of every arrogant rotten bone

there is no glory in crumbling bone, even if they howl.

There is no pride in a feeble bone even if they magnify

ظلموا وذَيَّاكَ الضَلالُ ضَلالُهم

ظلموا وذَيَّاكَ الضَلالُ ضَلالُهم

ولَوَوا عن السُبُلِ القويمةِ فالتَوَوا

ولَوَوا عن السُبُلِ القويمةِ فالتَوَوا

They did wrong, and that very error is their error;

They oppressed and the misguidance misguided them

and they turned from the straight paths, and so grew crooked.

And they deviated from the straight paths and crooked

قومٌ جَسَوا وقَسَوا بذي العِلَّاتِ اذ

قومٌ جَسَوا وقَسَوا بذي العِلَّاتِ اذ

لفحتهمُ ريحُ السَمُومِ لان ذَوَوا

لفحتهمُ ريحُ السَمُومِ لان ذَوَوا

A people grown stiff and hard amid these afflictions, when

A people who were harsh and cruel to the weak

the simoom wind scorched them—for they withered.

When the wind of toxins blew on them, for they had perfumed

يتظاهرونَ بغَيرةٍ إِيليَّةٍ

يتظاهرونَ بغَيرةٍ إِيليَّةٍ

هم كهنةُ الالصون أَغوَوا وانغَوَوا

هم كهنةُ الالصون أَغوَوا وانغَوَوا

They make a show of Elijah-like zeal;

They pretend to have religious zeal

they are thieving priests; they led others astray and were led astray.

They are priests of idols who have gone astray and led astray

لوأَن يَحِلُّ القتلُ كان قَضاؤُهُ

لوأَن يَحِلُّ القتلُ كان قَضاؤُهُ

حِلَّا وشاهدُ ذاك من قومٍ غَوَوا

حِلَّا وشاهدُ ذاك من قومٍ غَوَوا

If killing were lawful, carrying it out would be

If murder were made permissible, their judgement

lawful; and evidence of that comes from a people who went astray.

Would be dissolution, and witness to that are a people who have transgressed

هم انبياءُ الإِفك بِيحَ دماؤُهم

هم انبياءُ الإِفك بِيحَ دماؤُهم

فشكوا الظما ممَّا ارتأَوهُ وما ارتَوَوا

فشكوا الظما ممَّا ارتأَوهُ وما ارتَوَوا

They are prophets of falsehood; their blood was made lawful to shed.

They are prophets of lies, worthless is their blood

So they complained of thirst from what they had conceived, yet were not quenched.

So they complained of injustice, from what they plotted and wished

وطَوَت عليهم ارضُنا احشاءَها

وطَوَت عليهم ارضُنا احشاءَها

فطُوُوا بها وسيَنشُرونَ لما طَوَوا

فطُوُوا بها وسيَنشُرونَ لما طَوَوا

And our earth folded its entrails over them;

And our land has buried in its belly

so they were folded within it, and will rise again for what they folded away.

Those who have been buried in it, and they will be resurrected for what they buried

قد يُبطِنونَ المكرَ وهو مُحِيطهم

قد يُبطِنونَ المكرَ وهو مُحِيطهم

ومُحِيقهم ولكلِّ قومٍ ما نَوَوا

ومُحِيقهم ولكلِّ قومٍ ما نَوَوا

They may conceal deceit, yet it surrounds them

They may conceal schemes, but it surrounds them

and brings them to ruin; every people shall have what they intended.

And besieges them, and for every people is what they intend
