أَعيى على كل نَطسٍ طِبُّ اربعةٍ

عزَّ الشِفاءُ لها في العُربِ والعَجَمِ

عزَّ الشِفاءُ لها في العُربِ والعَجَمِ

The treatment of four ailments has baffled every skilled physician;

Blind to every fault my heart finds good in four:

their cure is elusive among Arabs and non-Arabs:

Healing is hard among Arabs and foreigners alike;

الجهلُ في صَلَفٍ والبُغضُ في حَسَدٍ

الجهلُ في صَلَفٍ والبُغضُ في حَسَدٍ

والفَقرُ في كَسَلٍ والسُقمُ في هَرَم

والفَقرُ في كَسَلٍ والسُقمُ في هَرَم

ignorance with arrogance, and hatred with envy;

Ignorance lies in conceit, hatred in envy,

and poverty with idleness, and sickness with old age.

Poverty in laziness, illness in old age.
