    O possessors of virtue and bounty,

    you who have become the wellspring of generosity.

    Your bounty has embraced everyone

    who came to you in need.

    Indeed, this world has never endured

    for any man, since days of old.

    خَيمُهُ نثرُ ما نَظَم

    Its nature is injustice and harm;

    its disposition, scattering what it has strung.

    شأَنُهُ حَلُّ ما بَرَم

    Its habit is to reclaim what it bestowed;

    its way, to untwist what it wound tight.

    يُبدِلُ البُرءَ بالسَقَم

    It clouds clear water with impurities;

    it replaces health with sickness.

    It is nothing new if it wrongs

    or oversteps its bounds—assuredly,

    time has already assailed, among humankind,

    ʿĀd together with Iram.

    And time has indeed made old

    the lords of fortress and pyramid.

    All this is the decree of Him who holds

    command in judgment and wisdom.

    Indeed, you possess a discernment

    that makes words unnecessary.

    And a little speech

    is much to one who understands.

    Indeed, a noble man has a way of speaking

    that, as they say, is wordless.

    We have sought out your dwellings,

    and they are a sanctuary for the seeker of bounty.

    Our circumstances are now plain,

    and so is our plight—why, then?

    Indeed, someone like us,

    whose plight is plain, is not blamed.

    مثلُ معروفكم يُؤَم

    If you recognize us, it is only

    kindness such as yours that is sought;

    or if you do not know us, we are

    like a fire upon a mountain.

    So reap thanks

    and praise, for there is no regret in generosity.

    May your kindness endure among people,

    putting the outpouring of steady rains to shame.
