O friend, devotion is not in wearing a cloak.
O wise one, asceticism is not in wearing wool
No, nor is detachment in dwelling on the hills.
Nor in dwelling alone upon the dunes.

Renunciation lies only in casting off the world and
Rather, asceticism is in rejecting the world and all
Self-conceit altogether; so hear the true tidings.
Self-pride - so listen sincerely to this counsel:

Moreover, detachment lies in cutting off desire,
Then, asceticism is in cutting off vain desire
Not through your solitary retreats and long stays in a tent.
Not by secluding yourself however long the seclusion.

Indeed, whoever has attained a heart that has grown pure
Indeed, he who attains a heart made pure
Discerns with the intellect what has been veiled.
Will perceive with reason what was obscured.
