    Many a flock, had it come in Moses' time,

    would have been the finest gift to God.

    O shepherds of God, finest of flocks,

    that may be seen as an example free of sins.

    فَذَّهُ ناب عن أُلوف توامِ

    Its lamb stood in for hundreds of rams;

    its lone one replaced thousands of twins.

    هل صَفاةٌ شَكَت أَذى الإِنثِلامِ

    No flaw arising from simplicity alarmed them;

    has a hard stone ever complained of the hurt of chipping?

    It has no rights, and so it faces no

    exacting reckoning on the Day of Resurrection.

    And when God takes back what He gave

    a servant, He spares him the harm of reproach.

    A person's honor rests on uprightness

    of his own, not on backs and wombs.

    For they are led by instinct, naturally, toward

    what they desire, without a rein.

    Acquired habit is overcome only by inborn nature

    and traits embedded in the bones.

    Thus changing innate dispositions is a difficult matter,

    like existence returning to nonexistence.
