Indeed, sin is an ordeal that could not be borne

By a master of reason, even were he solid rock.

Woe to it, for the arduous journey I have endured!

So I nearly died of sorrow, striving to endure.

The heart that squandered its time never knew,

In all its life, anything but diversions and play.

A heart afflicted, through what it relished, with intoxication:

In it, it encountered death, went astray, and ran riot.

When, then, will the cloud be cleared away that veils

The sun of guidance from it, so it may praise the one who guided it?

The sweetness of life has passed from me—how wretched!

Alas, I have wasted my days in vain!

I let my soul loose amid the cravings of passion,

So I became fettered in its stirrings.

And I strung sin's scattered fragments into a necklace of forbidden deeds,

I gathered them within the heart into a single whole.

A heart that stripped itself for sins, and so clothed itself

In sorrow, becoming clothed yet naked.

Our own doing has led us like a camel led to slaughter,

By force, though in this it knew no halter.

Until our enemies enslaved our souls,

Willingly, so we became slaves in their keeping.

So they took prisoner the one seized by their evil promptings,

And they are those whose captive cannot be ransomed.
