واستَزِد بالبُكا وخَلِّ المُزاحا
If you are a monk, be a constant mourner.
If you are a monk, then be a wailer
And weep ever more, and set jesting aside.
And increase your weeping and leave jesting aside
فَرَحُthe joy of التائِبِينَthe penitents فيon الأَرضِthe earth نَوحٌlamentation

إِنَّما النَوحُ يُبدعُ الأَفراحا
The penitents' joy on earth is lamentation;
For the joy of the repentant on earth is lament
it is lamentation alone that brings forth joys.
Indeed, wailing suppresses joys

O tear ducts of the eyes, pour forth generously.
O emotions of the eyes, be profuse in pouring down
O tears of reverent humility, increase your outpouring.
O tears of humility, increase your gushing

Perhaps you may wash clean a sinner's heart,
Perhaps you will shake the heart of a sinner
who trampled the sacred law through sin and violated it.
Who transgressed the law and made the forbidden permissible

Every day that passes without lament
your soul has forfeited its gains therein.
Your soul has lost profits

Ah, may God watch over a monk who shed tears
O may God have mercy on a monk who shed tears
of blood over his sins, and lamented.
As blood for sins, wailing

The devout monk's nature is weeping,
The trait of the pious monk is weeping
and lamentation that embraces sorrows.
And wailing that embraces hardships

Whoever comes bearing the burdens of a robe
Whoever wants to stand bearing the burden of attire
fills the earth and its regions with lamentation.
That fills the horizons and regions with lament

The mourners have seen no festival on earth—
The wailers have not seen a feast on earth
no, nor pleasure or merriment in it.
Neither pleasure with it, nor comfort

Nor do they desire a pleasant life
no, nor do they drink wine or liquor.
Nor do they drink wine and find rest

There is indeed a gulf between weeping and one who calls:
There is a great distance between weeping and a companion saying
O my drinking companion, pour me brimming cups!
“O friend, pour me overflowing cups”

Dry bread is their food at evening;
Their food is dry bread in the evening
I counted that evening as morning for me.
I have left that evening with me as morning

Every day their abode is desolate wilderness
is folded in; they have never let it know repose.
A shelter they have never seen breezy

فمن النُسكِ خِلتُهُم أَشباحا
For life's sustenance, there is eating and drinking;
For sustaining life is food and drink
so, through asceticism, I took them for phantoms.
So I have left them bodiless ghosts

They shredded their skin with harsh scourging;
They shed their skin with harsh discipline
they chastened it and left it covered in grievous wounds.
They disciplined it, leaving it wounded

Indeed, gluttony has a firestick within nature,
Passion in nature has a burning wick
sparking with fornication—nay, striking fire.
Kindling it with fornication, even ardently

It comes closer to corruption when sparked

And inform us of the guarded secret, so it is revealed

Will find no comfort except through humility

Silence is a door and lock for me
opening the throats has gained a key to it.
As opening frivolity has a key for it

Oh would that God make a jesting monk remorseful

Laughter is but a wing for lament
O wing that has become a sin against me!
Oh a wing that has become a wing for me

And I have notes explaining lament
their heading is silence, which cannot bear expansiveness.
Whose core is silence, unable to relax

My ailment is pride, and indulgence is my death;
My illness is indulgence and luxury, my death
indeed, my death surely destroys souls.
Is that my death destroys souls

Every devotion without lament and eulogy

Does not equal virtue and righteousness

For the soul has fervor and ardency
and nothing but lamentation reins in unruliness.
And nothing but lament restrains ardency

The close of counsel brings my ending back to the opening:
The seal of advice is my deficient chest’s return
If you are a monk, be a constant mourner.
To the start - if you are a monk, then be a wailer
