أَرَى في يد التِسماح عَظماً مجرَّداً

أَرَى في يد التِسماح عَظماً مجرَّداً

ومَدمَعُهُ يجري على ذلك العَظمِ

ومَدمَعُهُ يجري على ذلك العَظمِ

I see a bare bone in the crocodile’s hand,

I see in the hand of time a bare bone

And his tears stream over that bone.

And its tears flowing on that bone

فاذهلني هذا الصنيعُ لانهُ

فاذهلني هذا الصنيعُ لانهُ

صنيعةُ وحشٍ فاتكٍ عادمِ الحِلمِ

صنيعةُ وحشٍ فاتكٍ عادمِ الحِلمِ

So this deed astonished me, for it was

So this deed amazed me, for it is

The deed of a murderous beast, devoid of forbearance.

The deed of a savage beast, devoid of gentleness

فقلتُ اتبكي الذنبَ كونك قاتلاً

فقلتُ اتبكي الذنبَ كونك قاتلاً

فمالك تَذرِي الدمعَ سَجماً على سَجمِ

فمالك تَذرِي الدمعَ سَجماً على سَجمِ

So I said, “Do you weep over the sin of being a killer?

So I said, "Do you cry for the sin of being a killer?

Why, then, do you shed tears, torrent upon torrent?”

Why do you let your tears flow copiously on the bone?"

اجابَ لقد فوَّقتَ سهماً ولم تُصِب

اجابَ لقد فوَّقتَ سهماً ولم تُصِب

وشتَّانَ يا ذا الوهمِ جهلُكَ من عِلمِ

وشتَّانَ يا ذا الوهمِ جهلُكَ من عِلمِ

He answered, “You have indeed nocked an arrow, but missed.

He replied, "You have missed the mark with your arrow and did not hit,

And how far your ignorance is from knowledge, deluded one!

Oh you of delusion, your ignorance is far from knowledge,

لَعَمركَ ما نَوحي على الميتِ انما

لَعَمركَ ما نَوحي على الميتِ انما

على العَظم اذ لم يبقَ لي فيهِ من لحمِ

على العَظم اذ لم يبقَ لي فيهِ من لحمِ

By your life, my lament is not for the dead, but only

By your life, I do not grieve for the dead, but

For the bone, since no flesh remains on it for me.

For the bone, as no flesh remains for me,

وما كانَ فيهِ من لُحومٍ نَهِمتُها

وما كانَ فيهِ من لُحومٍ نَهِمتُها

وما عاد لي من بعدُ ما يبتغي نَهمي

وما عاد لي من بعدُ ما يبتغي نَهمي

And whatever flesh was on it, I greedily devoured,

Whatever flesh was on it, I devoured,

And afterward, nothing my ravenous appetite sought remained for me.”

And nothing remains for me to covet after that,

ففكَّرتُ في الخاطي المُصِرِّ وحتفهِ

ففكَّرتُ في الخاطي المُصِرِّ وحتفهِ

فيبكي ولكن لا على الذَنبِ والجُرمِ

فيبكي ولكن لا على الذَنبِ والجُرمِ

So I reflected on the obstinate sinner and his death:

So I reflected upon the sinner and his fate,

He weeps, but not over sin and crime,

Who cries - but not for the sin and crime,

ولكن على عُمرٍ تَقضَّى ولم يَعُد

ولكن على عُمرٍ تَقضَّى ولم يَعُد

لهُ زَمَنٌ يُحظيهِ في لَذَّة الجِسمِ

لهُ زَمَنٌ يُحظيهِ في لَذَّة الجِسمِ

But over a lifetime spent, with no more

But for a life now past, that will not return,

Time left for him to enjoy the body’s pleasures.

For him to enjoy the pleasures of the body,

فيا مدمعاً عندَ المنيةِ باطلاً

فيا مدمعاً عندَ المنيةِ باطلاً

تسحُّ لقد مرَّ الزمانُ فلا تَهمِي

تسحُّ لقد مرَّ الزمانُ فلا تَهمِي

So, O tearful eye, at the hour of death in vain

So O futile tears at death,

You gush; the time has passed, so flow no more.

Time has passed, so do not blame,

فمن نُقطةٍ كانت تبوخُ جهنَّمٌ

فمن نُقطةٍ كانت تبوخُ جهنَّمٌ

وتُوفي قِصاصَ الذنبِ بالكيفِ والكمِّ

وتُوفي قِصاصَ الذنبِ بالكيفِ والكمِّ

For a single drop would have quenched Hell,

For from a single teardrop came hellfire

And paid sin’s penalty in full, in manner and measure,

And fulfilled the punishment for sin, in full,

وانكَ قبلَ الآنَ تبكي على الخَطا

وانكَ قبلَ الآنَ تبكي على الخَطا

وتُؤثِرُ رَحضَ النفسِ من دَرَنِ الإِثم

وتُؤثِرُ رَحضَ النفسِ من دَرَنِ الإِثم

Had you, before now, wept over wrongdoing

While just now you cry over sin

And chosen to cleanse your soul of sin’s stain.

And prefer the delights of the soul over the disgrace of sin."
