لَقَدindeed أَفصحَmade plain الشيبُgray hair المَقُولَthe spoken message ولَخَّصاand made concise
وعَمَّand encompassed بهِwith it كلَّall الانامِhumankind وخصَّصاand singled out
Gray hair has indeed made its message plain and concise,
Indeed, gray hair has made speech eloquent, summarized it
and with it addressed all humankind, collectively and individually,
And made it universal to all people, specifying it
وأَنذَرَناand warned us إِنذارَthe warning افضلِof the finest ناصحٍcounselor
إذاwhen مَحَضَgave unalloyed النُصحَcounsel الجميلَfine وأَخلَصاand was sincere
and warned us as the finest counselor warns,
And warned us with the warning of the best advisor
when he offers fair counsel, pure and sincere.
When he presented good advice purely and sincerely
فأَكرِمso how noble بهِit is خِلاًas a friend وفياًloyal وواعظاًand an admonisher
تقياًpious نقياًpure صادقَtruthful in القولِspeech مُخلِصاsincere
So how noble it is—a loyal friend and admonisher,
So honor through it an intimate, loyal and preaching friend
pious, pure, truthful in speech, sincere!
Pious, pure, truthful in speech, sincere
فذاso this هَرَميmy old age والشيبُand gray hair كلٌّeach عنabout الرَدىdeath

So this old age of mine and gray hair—each, speaking of death,
So here is my graying and aging summarizing
has become a concise expositor of the art of eloquence.
The knowledge of rhetoric tomorrow explaining and summarizing
لَعَمرُكَby your life لمَّاwhen ابيضَّturned white فَوديmy temple ومَفرِقيand my hair's parting
صَغَوتُI listened لمعنىًto a meaning خُصَّwas singled out فيهِin it ونُصِّصاand made explicit
By your life, when my temple and my hair's parting turned white,
By your life, when my hair whitened and my parting
I heeded a meaning singled out in it and plainly stated.
I listened to a special, specified meaning
وماand what اعتاضَtook in exchange منfor مَعنىthe meaning الغَوايةِof error بانَbecame clear ليto me
وقدand already كانَwas عنيbeyond me قبلَbefore معناهُits meaning أَعوَصاmore obscure
And what was taken in exchange for error's meaning became clear to me,
And no meaning of misguidance was obscured to me
though its meaning had previously been more obscure to me.
Though before its meaning had been blind to me
أَنُوَّامُO sleepers هُبُّواawake إنماonly العُمرُlife ذاهبٌis passing away
ولاand do not تأمنَواfeel safe منfrom سارقٍa thief قدalready تلصَّصاprowled stealthily
O sleepers, awake! Life is slipping away,
Sleepers, awake! Life is but fleeting
and do not feel safe from a thief who has prowled by stealth.
And do not feel safe from a thief who has become emboldened
أَتبغُونَdo you seek منfrom هذاthis الزمانِage تطاوُلاًprolongation
وهاand behold إِنindeed ظِلَّthe shadow العُمرِof life منكمfrom you تقلَّصاhas shrunk
Do you seek a longer span from this age?
Do you seek longevity from this time?
And behold, life's shadow has shrunk away from you.
Yet lo, the shadow of life for you has diminished
ابانَrevealed لكمto you صَرفُthe turning الزمانِof time خفيَّهُits hidden side
وأَبدىand revealed اكتِتامِthe concealment الحقّof truth جهراًopenly وحصحصاand became manifest
The turning of time has revealed its hidden side to you,
The passage of time has revealed to you its hidden secret
and openly unveiled the concealed truth, making it plain.
And displayed clearly the darkness of truth, articulating and enunciating
فطُوبىso blessedness لمَرءٍto a person قدindeed أطاعَheeded عِظاتِهِits admonitions
وأُفٍّand fie لغرٍّupon an unwary fool جاهلٍignorant امرَهُits command عَصىdisobeyed
So blessed is the person who has heeded its admonitions,
Blessed is one who has obeyed its sermons
and fie on the ignorant fool who has defied its command!
And woe to an ignorant man who has disobeyed its command
لَقَدindeed شِيبَwas mingled صفوُthe purity العيشِof life بالهَمِّwith sorrow والقَذىand dregs
فماso not طابَgrew pleasant عيشُthe life المرءِof a person حتَّىbefore تَنغَّصاbecame embittered
Indeed, life's purity is mingled with sorrow and dregs;
Life's prime has been marred by worries and sorrows
no sooner does a person's life grow sweet than it is embittered.
So life was not sweet for a man until it became bitter
ولاand not ساغَwent down easily وِردُthe draught الزَهوِof pride يوماًever لواردٍfor a drinker
منَamong الناسِpeople الاwithout إِثرَimmediately after ذاكَthat تغصَّصاhe choked
Nor has pride's draught ever gone down easily for a drinker
The drink of pleasure was never palatable to any drinker
among humankind without his choking immediately afterward.
Until after that it was spoiled
أَترقُصُdo you dance مذبوحاًslaughtered بمُديةِby the knife of شهوةٍdesire
فياso, oh لَكَto you منof طيرٍa bird لهُfor it الذَبحُslaughter أَرقَصاmade it dance
Do you dance, slaughtered by the knife of desire?
Do you dance, slaughtered by the dagger of passion?
So what a bird you are, set dancing by slaughter!
What a bird you are, for whom slaughter is but dancing
فياso, O جاهلاًone ignorant of قَدرَthe worth الذيof what انتَyou باذلٌare giving away
لقدindeed جِئتَyou came بالقَدرِwith the worth الثمينِprecious مُرخَّصاcheapened
So, you who are ignorant of the value of what you give away,
O ignorant one, who has wasted a precious fate
you have indeed cheapened something of precious worth.
You have squandered a precious destiny cheaply
أَتَعلمُdo you know أَثمانَthe prices الذيof what أَنتَyou بائعٌare selling
لتُغليَso you may raise prices عنbased on عِلمٍknowledge اكيدٍcertain وتُرخِّصاand lower prices
Do you know the prices of what you are selling,
Do you know the price of that which you have sold
so you may raise and lower them with certain knowledge?
To be ignorant of a cunning ploy and make cheap
أَبَعتَhave you sold الرَجاhope باليأسِfor despair والنُورَand light بالدُجىfor darkness
وقِضتَand bartered السَماheaven بالأرضِfor earth والدُرَّand pearls بالحَصىfor pebbles
Have you sold hope for despair, and light for darkness,
You have sold hope for despair and light for darkness
and bartered heaven for earth, and pearls for pebbles?
And equated the sublime with the lowly and jewels with pebbles
لقدindeed زِدتَyou increased حتىuntil لاno مَزِيدَfurther increase علىbeyond الذيwhat
تناقصتَyou diminished فيin وزنٍweight ولاand never كانَwas أَنقَصاless
You have indeed increased until nothing can exceed the degree
You have increased until there is no increase over what
to which you have diminished in weight; nothing was ever less.
You have diminished in weight, though it was not already insufficient
تَمُدُّspreads لكfor you الدنياthe world شِباكَthe nets خِداعِهاof its deceit
بلَذَّاتهاwith its pleasures اللاتيwhich غدتhave become لكfor you مَقنِصاa trap
The world spreads out for you the nets of its deceit,
The world extends to you its deceptive snares
with its pleasures, which have become a trap for you.
With pleasures that have become constricting for you
لَعَمرُكَby your life ماnot زالَceased الطَماعُgreed محرِّضاًgoading
علىtoward حُبِّlove ذيthis الدنياworld الغَرُورdeceptive محَرِّصاinciting eagerness
By your life, greed has never ceased to goad,
By your life, the greedy one continues to incite
inciting love of this deceptive world.
Love of the deceitful world, avaricious
ولاand no بُدَّalternative للإِنسانfor a human being أَنto يَنزِلَdescend الثَرَىthe earth
ولوand even if أَنthat عَلاhe rose فوقَabove الكواكبِthe stars أَخمَصاa foot's arch
And a human being must descend into the earth,
Man must inevitably descend into the earth
even if the arch of his foot rises above the stars.
Even if he ascended above the stars toe-tip
ومنand whoever طَلَّقَdivorced الدُنياthe world بَتاتاًirrevocably فلاthen not يَذَرallow

And whoever divorces the world irrevocably must not let
And he who divorces the world completely, its hated love
the detested love of it lie in wait within him.
Will not cease to lurk for him
ومَنand whoever لمnot تروبصهُrefine him by fire إِرَاثُthe fires بليَّةٍof an affliction

And whoever has not been refined by the fires of an affliction
He who is not tested by the tribulation of an affliction
he patiently endures is not numbered among the refined.
Will not be saved, and from its harms not escape
ومَنand whoever لمnot يَلِجenter نارَthe fire التجارِبِof trials لمnot يَكُنbe

خِلاصاًpure ومنand from أوضارِهِhis impurities ماnot تخلَّصاfreed himself
And whoever has not entered the fire of trials cannot be
When a man is cleansed of the leprosy of sin
pure, nor has he freed himself of his stains.
That is the most pure, even if he was a leper
إذاwhen ماindeed تنَّقىcleansed himself المرءُa person منof بَرَصِthe leprosy الخطاof sin
فذاكَthen that one هُوَhe الأَنقىthe purest وانand even if كانَwas أَبرَصاleprous
When a person cleanses himself of the leprosy of sin,
He who discards the garb of his transgressions is successful
then he is the purest, even if he is leprous.
And dresses in the robe of a penitent, repentant
لقدindeed فازَtriumphed مَنwhoever انضىshed ثِيابَthe garments خَطائِهِof his sin
وفيand in ثوبِa garment ثوبٍrepentant return يلمقيٍّwhite تقمَّصاclothed himself
Indeed, he has triumphed who has shed the garments of his sin,
I have seen from the days what has frightened me
and clothed himself in a white garment of repentance.
And awakened the senses of my mind, making them vigilant
رايتُI saw منamong الايامthe days ماwhat قدindeed أراعنيterrified me
وأَعشىand dimmed لَحاظَthe gaze العقلِof reason منيin me وشوَّصاand made it squint
I have seen in the days things that have terrified me,
I have abstained from the deception of a time that made me
and dimmed my reason's gaze and made it squint.
Stingy through its stinginess, and praise be to God, most stingy
تخاوصتُI squinted عنaway from تخويصِthe narrowing of eyes دهرٍan age اصارَنيmade me
بخَوصائِهِthrough its calamity والحمدُand praise لِلّهِto God أَخوَصاnarrow-eyed
I turned a squinting eye away from time's eye-narrowing, which made me
I spent therein fifty-five years
narrow-eyed through its calamity—praise be to God.
With abundant sins, increasing in number, countless
قضيتُI spent بهِin it خمساًfive وخمسينَand fifty حِجَّةًyears
بإِكثارِby multiplying ذنبٍsin زادَincreased عَدّاًin number فماso not انحَصَىcould be counted
I spent in it fifty-five years,
I disdained my life after it sapped my strength
multiplying sin, whose count grew beyond all reckoning.
My gray hair, in which I needed a cane to walk
أَنِفتُI disdained حياتيmy life بعدَafter ماthat ابتزَّstole قُوَّتيmy strength
مشيبيmy gray hair وفيهِand in it احتجتُI needed فيin المشيwalking للعَصاfor a staff
I disdained my life after my strength was stolen
So God decreed I face judgment
by my gray hair; then I needed a staff to walk.
With the fairest judgment, either destroying or saving
فعنso from كَثَبٍnear at hand القىI shall meet الالهGod مُحاكَماًbeing judged
باحكمunder the most exact عدلٍjustice مُهلَكاًdestroyed اوor مُخلَّصاsaved
So soon I shall meet God, brought to judgment,
So there is no refuge but in Him who is my goal
under the most exact justice, either destroyed or saved.
For I do not see in other than Him a savior for me
فلاso no غَوذescape الاexcept بالذيthrough Him who هُوَHe غايتيmy goal
فلستُfor I do not أَرىsee فيin غيرهِany other than Him ليَfor me مَخلَصاdeliverance
So there is no escape except through Him who is my goal,
for I see no deliverance for myself in any other.
