Do not ask me, O my visitor, about my heart.

For my heart lies somewhere between a sea and a valley.

It remained dwelling in those quarters,

    grazing among those uplands.

O breeze of the gardens, by God, if you pass—

—through those mountains and towering peaks,

do convey greetings from me and on my behalf

to that sanctuary of lofty pillars.

And offer my longing with tenderness and modesty,

and respect, to my brothers devoted to worship.

Tell them something of what ails me—that I

am steadfast in my pledge and unwavering in affection.

You are like me; I see you lovesick and ailing,

and both of us wander homeless in the wilderness.

So help me carry my longing to them,

and relate my passion, attributing it to me.

Indeed, I am wasted by the pain of separation.

O brother in longing, may you not be far away as I am.

O my lamenter, call for me and my companions; cry out for me.

For how often I wander lovesick through every valley!

May rain shower you generously, O haunts of my former days,

and may life-giving rain and recurring downpours water you.

And may a north wind and an east wind greet you,

and an easterly breeze among the evening and morning winds.

O tears, if you would come to my aid,

then pour from my eye without delay.

Indeed, my reason is dead from sins,

and so I have donned the robe of black.

My sin prescribed for me—[the remaining wording is unclear as supplied].

My burden of sin imposed on me the wearing of mourning.

I have burdened myself with a course of error,

so dreadful it could frighten the heart of lifeless matter.

Yet I place my hope in the Mother of God,

who is the best intercessor on the Day of Return:

Mary, the succor of the worlds, whom

God chose as a mercy for His servants.

Through her, the chosen attained their election,

and robed themselves in the fine silk of glories.

    فازوا بأَسعَدِ الإِسعادِ

    They were blessed with good fortune in God's kingdom;

    they attained the happiest felicity.

They would not have gained steadfastness in righteousness, had it not been that

she reached them with the grace of support—

the Queen of earth and the heavens, the Mother of God.

My chanting grows sweet through praising her.

Offer whatever praise you wish, and do not fear

exaggeration in it or excessive increase.

If the Father has made her a mother

to His Son, nursing Him without corruption,

she bore Him and nursed Him as God,

while she was a virgin before and after childbirth.

She was filled with grace, so became sovereign and raised up

every excellence that rises above a singer's praise.

Then with what praise can you describe a virgin

who joined together the most distant opposites?

Thus, it is impossible to praise the Mother of God,

whom the angels blessed at the birth.

May God sanctify her remembrance whenever there wafts—

—its delightful fragrance through every gathering.
