قلص النفوس بتأديبٍ يلي الدَلَجا
Death's camel-driver spares no effort on the journey, urging onward
The guide of death tirelessly journeys on
the young she-camels of souls, with chastening that follows night travel.
Disciplining souls, leading them to gloom

All people have entered the arena of doom,
And people have become prey in the arena of events
some preceding, others following, all passing on.
Some ahead, some behind, all on a path

Death's law is a decree that cannot be undone;
The law of death is an immutable decree
every son of woman has hastened toward it upon his course.
For every son of woman, it has set a course

Indeed, the elements have departed from their nature
The elements deviated from their nature
for a time, possessing no arguments to defend their right;
For a time, but had no argument for their right

death alone has never had its law annulled,
Except death, its law was never annulled
nor has it ended: it exacts the days and years.
Nor were its days and proofs refuted

Blessed is one who died rejoicing in God;
Happy is one who died content with God
death did not frighten him when it came, nor was he troubled.
Undaunted by death when it came upon him

Why do we seek exemption from the cup at its watering place,
Why do we shy away from the cup we must drink?
when no one is exempt from drinking it?
None will avoid it, all must taste its bitterness

Away with it—a creditor that cannot be repelled,
Far from any ineffective adversary
and a collector demanding the soul and lifeblood.
It claims the soul and the bones

It is the decree from which there is no escape,
It is fate from which none can be diverted
and no mortal has escaped its claim.
No mortal escapes its writ

It ceaselessly plunders souls in haste
a driver breaking bodies and vaulted halls,
Ruthlessly reaping lives, ripe and green

Where are the kings who ruled mankind, and those
Who built great monuments? All in dust interred
who raised fortresses? All have passed into the dust.
Neither old nor young has surpassed decay

So death has spared neither old man nor youth,
Yet for all, the gates of decay were opened
but has shut death's gates upon them all.

It tore the gallbladders—nay, crushed hearts with grief,
Eyes raining tears commingled with blood
and the eye sheds tears mingled with blood.

It made eyes stream over the eye of the age and the great ones
And notables of people, a day plunged in gloom
of mankind; a day grew dark through death.

You imagine every grieving man, in the grip of gasping, weeping,
As if scourged at the horrible scene
as though a choking bone were set crosswise in his throat.

I never thought that time would bereave me
For one who was our richest shelter and hope
of the one who was our most bountiful refuge and hope.
