وليسَand is not يدٌa hand تُقَبِّلُهاyou kiss it لخوفٍout of fear
نظيرَthe equal of يدٍa hand تُقَبِّلُهاyou kiss it لشَوقِout of longing
And a hand you kiss out of fear is not
the equal of a hand you kiss out of longing.
وماnor is there منany صُحبةcompanionship عُنفاًthrough violence وقهراًand coercion
كصُحبةlike the company of منone whom تَوَدُّyou love لفَرطfrom an excess of تَوقِyearning
Nor is companionship through violence and coercion
like the company of one you love with overwhelming yearning.
أَلاlo! إِنَّindeed البلاياthe calamities قدalready أحاطتhave surrounded
جِهاتيmy directions السِتَّthe six حتَّىuntil ضاقَgrew tight طَوقيmy collar
Lo, calamities have hemmed me in
on all six sides, until my collar tightened:
فمنso from يُمنىthe right ويُسرىand the left منfrom وَرائيbehind me
وقُدَّاميand before me ومنand from تحتيbeneath me وفَوقيand above me
from my right and left, from behind me,
and before me, from beneath me and above me.
فماso not قدever راقنيpleased me دهرٌan age دَهَتنيassailed me
بهِin it أَرزاؤُهُits calamities فحَطَمنَand so they shattered رَوقيmy horn
So no age has pleased me in which I was assailed
by its calamities, which shattered my horn.
