O you who wander heedlessly in the darkness of the earth,

enough of your misery and bewilderment!

Carry, in remorse, the remains of your dead,

and mourn long beside the graves.

Anoint them with perfume; wrap their remains

    in jujube blossoms and jasmine.

And raise around them a hymn of peace,

so every sorrowing one may rest easy in the grave.

Gather the little children, so they may sing

    melodies of serenity and smiling.

Rescue the dead from the clamor of war,

so they may feel the beauty of peace.

Why this strife, O you living?

Why the fighting? Why the bloodshed?

Why did the young, in the flower of their lives,

fall as victims? And why this enmity?

Is it love of wealth? O wonder of the heart!

And what is fleeting wealth worth?

Tomorrow brings a departure: can the dead

ward off the desolation of shrouds with money?

    هُ فهــل ثَـمَّ فـي الممـاتِ ثـراءُ؟

    Every living being tomorrow will make for the grave;

is there, then, wealth in death?

    Open these graves; come,

tell us: where are wealth and prosperity?

Look: here, upon thorns and sand,

the wealthy and the destitute lie.

What difference do you see? Is there anything but the silence

of death above the graves and those lying within?

How strange! What, then, has driven this

universe toward death, suffering, and destruction?

Why are peoples driven by the ambitions of a naive fool

whose eyes are beguiled by the blaze of fire?

The rapture of victory? Oh, the mockery of words!

Oh, the illusions! Oh, the delusion!

    ـمًـا وهبُّـوا مـن الكَـرَى والخيـالِ

    O deluded ones, enough of illusion;

    awake from slumber and fantasy.

We are captives, led by blind fate

into the night of an unknown world.

    ليس منــا غــير الأسـيرِ الـذليلِ

    None of us can break free;

none of us is anything but an abject captive.

    ليس يُجْــدي تضــرّعٌ أو بكــاءُ

    Forever the nights command, and we walk;

    neither supplication nor weeping avails.

Death does not fear a tyrant's onslaught,

nor do the weak stir it.

Thus death prevails for all eternity,

while we are the fallen, weak and bewildered.

    فــاندبوا مــا دعوتمـوهُ انتصـارا

    Its is the victory and the glory over us;

so lament what you called a victory.

    O ruined world, war has

brought forth the triumph of death.

These graves have borne witness to its

    victory—oh, pity those victims!

Then what, O dwellers of the sorrow-stricken world?

What have you reaped from fighting?

And have you reached the distant stars,

and escaped the grasp of torment?

Have you overcome poverty and sorrows

    and sickness, O deluded ones?

Have you escaped sins, or does

    life remain temptation and debauchery?

Alas, souls remain as they were,

    living in their eternal sin.

Within existence, the song of sorrow remains,

sung by the weak and hungry.

Within existence, the sick still linger, bewildered,

    forever assailed by pains.

Everything remains as it was before

the war, except the orphans and the dead,

except a shadow of melancholy and bewilderment

walking along the shores of life.

    Only yesterday these orphans were

the image of cheer and lovely merriment.

Beneath their fathers' shade, they spent a life

    knowing only its honeyed serenity.

And they awoke from their dream: behold, fate

was war, and the universe slaughter and fire.

O children's eyes, do not ask the world:

Why the flames? Why the destruction?

For the sake of counterfeit glory comes this

horror—may their glory perish, may it perish!

For the sake of a masked victory, the

sweet world became smoke amid the flames.

These fallen ones upon rocks and thorns,

young men, youths, and middle-aged men—

how, only yesterday, they were the marvel of a vision

they had drawn, which did not smile for long!

O wretched ones on earth, O you

whom the shells of fire did not kill,

in vain you hope that now

your loved ones will return to their homelands.

Look, here are the soldiers returning,

one by one, their limbs shattered.

Ah, but for a remnant of life,

they would not be counted among the living.

In vain they search these ruins

for their families and their shelter.

In vain they ask; the passerby knows

nothing—oh, the fire of their grief!

How they tasted the bitterness of black disappointment

    after pains and ailments!

Did they escape the claws of death and captivity

only to fall captive to misery?

O wretched ones, O throngs of the living,

in every village and on every plain,

it is time to reclaim a past of love,

which is the key to our lost dream.

What is this hatred between us? What

was the secret of fighting and rancor?

O resentful ones, we are all

equals in the hands of terrible calamities.

We live in a world where none knows

its secret, for it is an unknown darkness.

The sun rises each day: what is the essence

of its radiance? And why does it set?

What makes the stars rise over the universe

at evening? What is the essence of this existence?

What is this space? And what is the secret

of its darkness? Are there bounds beyond it?

We—are we in existence anything but ignorance

    cast in human form?

Everything in the cosmos rules us—what,

then, is the secret of that tyranny?

Why do we tyrannize? How can we forget the powers of the universe,

when nothing in existence is weaker than us?

Worms gnaw at what we build, and neither

    volcanoes nor winds spare us.

Why do we spend our lives in enmities,

passing the years in despair and sorrow?

How can we forget that we live the life

of the rose, which soon dies and perishes?

The days will not endure; time will not preserve

the existence of any human being.

So let us leave these grudges and hatreds,

    and live in pure affection.
