On the slopes of hills, where the lovely flock

Grazes on the banks of the brook,

And the murmur of a stream with grassy banks,

    Running to the edges of the valley;

And sweet bleating from the rapturous sheep,

Thus hopes grow quiet for a while,

And the bitterness of sorrows fades.

    Thus I bury ambition, as

    Every aspiring mortal buries it.

And the eyes of fate laugh at me,

    Mocking my human frailty.

O eyes of fate, do not gaze upon my tears,

    Nor mock my sorrowful heart.

If a prophet's ambition is in my blood,

The sorrow of the despairing fills my eyes.

    مي فيا ليتني عصيت هواه

    This ambition was the curse of my days;

Ah, if only I had defied its desire.

Whenever time fulfilled for my heart

A dream, my life imagined another.

I do not know what my heart will reap

From my wandering through every horizon and star.

Make me laugh, and set me free as a turtledove,

    Singing of your enchanting beauty.

Or let me weep for the wretched of the earth,

    Between longing and deprivation.

O earth, in you the meaning of hope is lost,

    And misery and troubles remain.

And in death's gloom the voices of songs have faded,

    And the lyre has surrendered.

What use, then, are solace and illusory hope

In the heart of the pitch-dark night?

And why do the wretched hide their affliction

And live in deception and illusion?

I have described misery in my weeping verse,

And portrayed the souls of the wretched.

I have sung life as a mournful melody

With no ray of light in its night.

So my melancholy stirred people's wonder,

And they were baffled by its unknown secret.

They did not know that I lament

Their tragedy in its shrouding darkness.

I weep for every sorrowful heart

    Whose songs fate has scattered,

And with my tears I water every branch,

Thirsty, whose fragrant blossoms have withered.
