How did Majnun die? Was Layla

    happy? Ask these sorrowful deserts.

Ask them what Qays told the wind

last night, and how he lived his years—

    that wandering, dreamy poet,

friend of the gazelles in the desert,

and confidant of the sands, the wild beasts, and the

wastelands, and a specter of pallor and ailments.

Love crushed his sensitive, tender heart,

so he lived his life without a home,

upon those sands, chanting the poems

of his love to every raging wind that blows by night,

tracing on the face of the sand what

there was of longing, sorrow, and yearning,

    kissing every spot where Layla

had passed in the years gone by,

when she tended the sheep and

Qays tended his flock, so she sang, and he sang,

and with the melody resounded those

brown sands, where the gazelles frolicked and ran.

When she was—oh, the yearning of the poet

in love! What have the fates left?

The joy of youth ran dry, and the valley

withered; the flowers dried up in its expanse.

    ذوت تحته معالم ليلى

    And a grave remained at the foot of the hill;

    beneath it, Layla's features withered.

    تخذتها الأشلاء في القبر ظلاّ

    And a little rosebush bent above it;

the bodily remains in the grave took it as shade.

    And tormented Qays remained, weeping

through what remained of his stricken life,

lying at the grave's edge, never ceasing

to lament to the east wind and the clouds.

He longed for the night of death and called

it to himself by the sweetest names,

and sang to death the loveliest melodies

of his love beneath darkness and light.

Then one day morning came, and Qays

was in death's hand, dazed and struck down.

No tears were shed for him but the wind's sigh

and the mournful cry of owls.

O hearts of lovers, enough of love!

And take Qays's tragedy as an example.

This is life: it grants the living

    nothing but torment and terrors.

It deceived us with love, longing, and remembrance,

and behind it there is nothing but illusions:

a base world clamoring with sin,

and living between passion and darkness.
