تَقلَّصَhas receded ظِلٌّshade للشَّبابِof youth ورَيفُluxuriant
وأقبلَand has come منfrom ضَاحيbright expanse المَشِيبِgray hair رَديفُa follower
Youth's luxuriant shade has receded,
The shadow of youth has shrunk, and old age
And from the bright expanse of gray hair a follower has come.
Comes marching in from the outskirts of life.
وأيُّand what صباحٍmorning لاnot تليهِfollows it عشيَّةٌevening
وأيُّand what ربيعٍspring لاnot يليهِfollows it خَريفُautumn
And what morning is not followed by evening?
What dawn does not end in dusk?
And what spring is not followed by autumn?
What spring is not followed by autumn?
علىin مِثلِthe manner of هذاthis قدindeed مضىhas passed الدَّهرُtime وانقضىand ended
كذلكَlikewise يَمضيpasses away تالدٌthe old وطريفُand the new
In just this way time has passed and ended;
Time has passed thus and continues to pass -
Thus the old and the new alike pass away.
The young grow old, the new grow worn.
سوادُblackness اللَّياليthe nights فيin بياضِwhiteness نَهارِهاtheir day
أساطيرُtales لاnot تُقراare read لَهُنَّbelonging to them حُروفُletters
The blackness of nights in the whiteness of their day—
The black nights amid the white days
Tales whose letters cannot be read.
Are legends no letters can spell.
خليليَّmy two friends ماwhat للنَّاسwith people يضحكُlaughs واحدٌone person
وتبكيand weep مئاتٌhundreds حولَهُaround him وأُلُوفُand thousands
My two friends, what ails people? One laughs,
My friend, why should one man laugh
While hundreds and thousands weep around him.
While thousands around him weep?
لقدindeed شَنَّhas launched هذاthis الدَّهرُtime غارةَa raid جاهِلٍan ignorant man
تَساوَىare alike خَسِيسٌthe base عِندهُto it وشَرِيفُand the noble
Indeed, this age has launched an ignorant man's raid;
Time has waged the raid of an ignorant lout -
To it, the base and the noble are alike.
The low and the noble are equal to him.
بَلاءٌan affliction علىupon وجهِthe face البسيطةِthe earth غامِرٌengulfing
كَطُوفانِlike the flood of نُوحٍNoah حينَwhen كانwas يَطوفُsweeping around
An affliction engulfing the face of the earth,
Affliction floods the face of the earth
Like Noah's flood when it swept all around.
Like Noah's deluge in days gone by.
لهُit has بينَamid أكبادِlivers الرِّجالِmen مَخالبٌclaws

نَشِبنَthey have sunk in وَفِيand in الأَعناقِthe necks مِنهُfrom it سُيوفُswords
It has claws amid the livers of men,
He has claws that tear at men's hearts,
That have sunk in; and in their necks are its swords.
With swords embedded in necks.

How many healthy men have sickened in this world—and how many, and how many
How the upright in this world fall ill,
Gathered throngs have scattered across the expanse of the lands!
While knaves spread far and wide!
وكمْand how many صُدِعَتْwere split للفاتكينَby the killers مَفارِقٌcrowns of heads

And how many heads have been split by killers,
How brides are torn from their bridegrooms,
And how many noses have been rubbed in the dust before rulers!
And the arrogant are tamed against their will!
هوit is البينُparting لاnot تدريyou know طريقاًa path لوَفْدهِfor its delegation

It is parting: you know no path by which its envoys come,
He is clear, but you know not his coming,
So that you might escape; nor can caves save you from it.
So that you may be saved or sheltered in caves.
ويدخلُand enters بابَthe gate الحصنِthe fortress وَهْوَwhile it is مُوَصَّدٌbolted shut
ويُبصِرُand sees فيin الدَّيجورِdeep darkness وَهْوَwhile it is كَثِيفُdense
And it enters the fortress gate though it is bolted shut,
He enters the door of a fortress though fastened,
And sees in darkness, however dense.
And sees clearly in deepest darkness.
وأعجبُand I marvel كيفَhow النَّاسُpeople ضلُّواhave strayed عنِfrom الهُدَىguidance
كماjust as ضلَّstrayed عنfrom ضَوءِthe light النَّهارِthe day كَفيفُa blind man
And I marvel how people have strayed from guidance,
Strange that men have lost the right path,
As a blind man strays from the light of day.
As the blind loses daylight.
إذاwhen ماemphatic particle رأىsees المَيْتَthe dead man الفَتىthe youth قالَsays ماwhat أناI

When a youth sees a dead man, he says, 'What have I
When the living sees the dead youth, he says
to do with that? For death's herald is my ally.'
"Not I - for me, the messenger of death waits."

To you, Muhammad, a greeting is sent,
Greetings to you, O Muhammad,
Gentle, conveyed to you by a gentle soul.
Brought by a gentle messenger.
أُحاشيكَI exclude you منfrom جهلٍignorance فإنَّكَfor indeed you are عاقِلٌsensible
خبيرٌwell-versed بأحكامِin the decrees الزَّمانِtime حَصيفُdiscerning
I hold you above ignorance, for you are sensible,
Save me from ignorance, for you are wise
Well-versed in time's decrees, discerning.
And skilled in the ways of Time.
شَكَوتُI complained الذيthat which تَشكوهُyou complain of it مِنof هَوْلِthe terror بأسِهِits violence
ولكنَّand yet صبريmy patience فيin البَلاءِaffliction ضَعيفُweak
I have lamented what you lament—the terror of its violence;
I complained of the horrors of his tyranny,
But my patience in affliction is weak.
But patience in ordeal fails me.
وإنَّand indeed الحَصىpebbles عندto الجَزُوعِthe fretful ثَقِيلةٌheavy

And indeed, pebbles are heavy to the fretful,
Pebbles are heavy for the weak of heart,
And a massive smooth rock is light to the patient.
While boulders seem light to the steadfast.
