    فَسقَتْني سَلْسَبِيلا

    You took a path toward me;

Then she gave me Salsabil to drink—

A daughter of thought from Khalil,

    Who quenched my burning thirst.

I tasted from her the manna of speech

That was sure to bring solace,

And meanings like the breeze of the

Garden when it blew at eventide.

    They stirred within me sorrows

That had lain quiet for a long time,

And built within me, for longing,

    Dwellings that had been ruins.

Why do I yearn for poetry,

When youth has hastened its departure?

    Whenever I recite a verse,

I glimpse in it one who reproaches me.

This life has been wasted—woe is me!

And has passed, save a little.

Though I have slain Time by knowing it well,

How often I am found slain!

    We are nothing but plants

    Passing away, generation after generation.

    Whenever a verdant plant withers,

    The garden brings forth another.

O crescent that has shown us

In the darkness a beautiful face,

We shall behold in you a full moon,

    Complete, called Khalil.
