أهلاًwelcome بعائدةٍto a visitor أتتshe came تَشفينيto heal me
أهلاً بعائدةٍ أتت تَشفيني
فهِيَfor she الطَّبيبُthe physician لِعلَّتيfor my illness وشُجُونيand my sorrows
فهِيَ الطَّبيبُ لِعلَّتي وشُجُوني
Welcome to a visitor who has come to heal me;
for she is the physician who heals my illness and my sorrows.
جاءتshe came كنافحةٍlike a waft لمِسْكِof the musk of تحيَّةٍa greeting
جاءت كنافحةٍ لمِسْكِ تحيَّةٍ
منfrom أرضِthe land of مِصرٍEgypt ليسَnot منfrom دارِينِDarin
من أرضِ مِصرٍ ليسَ من دارِينِ
She came like a waft of a greeting's musk,
from the land of Egypt, not from Darin.
أهدَىsent as a gift إليَّto me بهاwith her لبيبٌa discerning man عاقلٌwise
أهدَى إليَّ بها لبيبٌ عاقلٌ
فأصابَand so he earned أجراًa reward ليسَthat is not بالممنونِcut off
فأصابَ أجراً ليسَ بالممنونِ
A discerning, wise man sent her to me as a gift,
and earned a reward that never ends.
سلَّىhe distracted بهاwith her قلبيmy heart عنfrom السقَّمَthe sickness الذيthat
سلَّى بها قلبي عن السقَّمَ الذي
مِنهُfrom it نَحِلتُI wasted away فصِرتُso I became كالعُرجونَlike a date-cluster stalk
مِنهُ نَحِلتُ فصِرتُ كالعُرجونَ
With her he distracted my heart from the sickness that
made me waste away, till I became like a date-cluster stalk.
للهto God! (in admiration) ياO صافِيpure of الفُؤادِheart كأنَّهُas though it were
لله يا صافِي الفُؤادِ كأنَّهُ
منof فِضَّةٍsilver لاnot مِنof لَوازبِclinging lumps of طِينِclay
من فِضَّةٍ لا مِن لَوازبِ طِينِ
God be praised, O pure of heart! It is as though it were
of silver, not of clinging lumps of clay.
يزدادُincreases فيهِwithin it كلَّماwhenever طالَlengthens المَدَىthe span of time
يزدادُ فيهِ كلَّما طالَ المَدَى
حُبٌّa love تحرَّكَhas stirred فيin مَقامِan abode of سُكونِstillness
حُبٌّ تحرَّكَ في مَقامِ سُكونِ
Within it, as time stretches on, there grows
a love that has stirred in an abode of stillness.
لكَyours is منَّةٌa favor جارتْbore down عليَّon me بثِقْلِهاwith its weight
لكَ منَّةٌ جارتْ عليَّ بثِقْلِها
كالدَّينlike a debt أثقَلَweighed down كاهِلَthe shoulders of المَدْيونِthe debtor
كالدَّين أثقَلَ كاهِلَ المَدْيونِ
You have done me a favor whose weight bears down on me,
like a debt that weighs down a debtor's shoulders.
قصَّرتُI fell short دونَكَbehind you عِندَwhen جَرْيكَyour running مُحرِزاًwinning
قصَّرتُ دونَكَ عِندَ جَرْيكَ مُحرِزاً
قصَبَthe victor's reed السِّباقِof the race منin المحبَّةlove دُونيahead of me
قصَبَ السِّباقِ من المحبَّة دُوني
I fell short of you as you ran, winning
the victor's reed in love's race, ahead of me.
بينيbetween me وبينكَand between you شُقَّةٌa distance قَرُبَتhas grown short علىfor
بيني وبينكَ شُقَّةٌ قَرُبَت على
قلبيmy heart وإنeven though بَعُدَتhas grown distant إِزاءَbefore عُيونيmy eyes
قلبي وإن بَعُدَت إِزاءَ عُيوني
Between us lies a distance that has narrowed for
my heart, though it stretches far before my eyes.
وإذاand when تألَّفتِunite القُلوبُhearts تقرَّبتdraws near
وإذا تألَّفتِ القُلوبُ تقرَّبت
مِنto دارِa home in قُطْرِthe land of الشَّامِal-Sham دارُa home in الصِّينِChina
مِن دارِ قُطْرِ الشَّامِ دارُ الصِّينِ
And when hearts unite, there draws near
to a home in the land of al-Sham a home in China.
