هذا الذي أعطى ملائِكةَ السَّما

هذا الذي أعطى ملائِكةَ السَّما

نفساً مكرَّمةً وفاتَ لَنا الجَسَدْ

نفساً مكرَّمةً وفاتَ لَنا الجَسَدْ

This is he who gave the angels of heaven

He who gave heaven's angels a noble soul

an honored soul, and his body was lost to us.

And left us the mortal body

ناحتْ عليهِ بنو طِرادٍ حَسرَةً

ناحتْ عليهِ بنو طِرادٍ حَسرَةً

وتأسَّفتْ لفِراقِهِ كلُّ البَلَدْ

وتأسَّفتْ لفِراقِهِ كلُّ البَلَدْ

The sons of Tirad lamented him in grief,

The people of Tyre lamented him

and the whole town mourned his departure.

And the whole country grieved his loss

قد حلَّ في هذا الضَّريحِ مُجاوِراً

قد حلَّ في هذا الضَّريحِ مُجاوِراً

رَحَماتِ رَبٍّ ليسَ يُحصيها عَدَدْ

رَحَماتِ رَبٍّ ليسَ يُحصيها عَدَدْ

He has settled in this tomb, dwelling beside

He now rests in this tomb, a neighbor

a Lord’s mercies, which no number can count.

To the mercies of a Lord beyond count

وعليهِ تأريخٌ يدومُ مُسَطَّراً

وعليهِ تأريخٌ يدومُ مُسَطَّراً

بيروتُ تلهَجُ باسمِ جرجسَ للأبدْ

بيروتُ تلهَجُ باسمِ جرجسَ للأبدْ

And upon it a chronogram remains inscribed:

And upon it an enduring inscription

Beirut forever repeats the name of Jirjis.
