    فيا لَكَ سِرّاً واقفاً تحتَ بائحِ

    The tears of a lover's eyelid are among the telltale signs;

ah, what a secret you are, standing beneath a revealer!

And whoever among us cannot control his heart—

can he control tears that spill after welling up?

We halted at Wadi al-Ghada, and its branches

nearly catch fire from the longing within my ribs.

We see the camel-litters' canopies between our ribs,

and ask every morning traveler and evening wayfarer about them.

Every lover has his own disposition in love,

but not every disposition is good.

And the most upright of lovers is one who does not resort

to offering an excuse when meeting an adviser.

I loved the one who gave his heart to the sciences,

so they yielded him favorable omens after adverse ones.

I drew hope for him from the name al-Khidr; and how often

you see a man whose name is not devoid of signs.

    ويا حبَذَّا لو نِلتُ رؤيةَ لامحِ

    I found in him—rather, from him—a listener's delight;

and how lovely if I could catch a glimpse of him!

Because of him, my eyes envied my ear; and sometimes

some of the senses alone enjoy good fortune.

Playful with the subtleties of speech despite his youth,

I saw in him the praised one in a praiser's robe.

Far from it! Age does not bestow wisdom

on one whose heart does not yield it by nature.

When full, it will outshine the sun in the radiance of midmorning—

a crescent that outshines the full moon in Sa'd Dhabih.

Every new thing in time has its endings,

    to which well-wrought beginnings point.
