حَزَنُgrief القلوبِthe hearts علىfor الغريبِthe stranger غريبُstrange
حتىuntil تكادَalmost لهُfor him القلوبُthe hearts تذوبُmelt
The hearts' grief for the stranger is strange,
The hearts grieve for the stranger, the stranger
until the hearts almost melt for him.
Till they almost melt for him
والموتُand death فيin نفسِthe very essence of الحقيقةِreality واحدٌone
لكنbut يُفرِّقُdistinguishes بينهُbetween its instances الأُسلوبُthe manner
And death, in its very essence, is one,
And death in reality is one
but its manner makes the difference.
But the style makes distinction between it
كلٌّeveryone نراهُwe see him علىalong الطَّريقِthe road مسافراًtraveling
أبداًalways وماand not أحدٌanyone نراهُwe see him يأُوبُreturns
We see everyone traveling along the road,
We see everyone on the road a traveller
always, and we see no one return.
Forever, and no one do we see returning
ياO سَفرةًa journey بَعُدتْgrew distant مَسافةُthe distance to دارِهاits abode

O journey, whose destination lies far away
O journey whose distance from its abode
from us, though its day is near.
Is far from us, and its day is near
عَجَباًhow astonishing لِمنat one who يُمسيenters evening ويُصبحُand enters morning خائفاًafraid
منof مَوتهِhis death ولهُand for him الحياةُlife تَطيبُis sweet
How astonishing that one is fearful, evening and morning,
Surprising is he who becomes evening and morning afraid
of his death, while life is sweet to him.
Of his death while life is good for him
طَفَحَتoverflowed علىover بَصَرِthe sight of القلوبِthe hearts غِشاوةٌa veil
حتىuntil تَساوىbecame equal أحمقٌa fool ولبيبُand a wise man
A veil has spread over the hearts' vision,
A cloudiness has covered the eyes of hearts
until fool and wise man became alike.
So that a fool and wise man become equal

ويَلومُand blames كلَّevery مُغَفَّلٍheedless person ويَعيبُand finds fault
The young man spends his days in heedlessness,
The youth spends his days in heedlessness
yet blames and disparages every heedless person.
And blames every heedless one and finds faults

Delusion has engulfed people, until even he has strayed
Vanity has included people until he who
who guides, and a physician has wasted away from illness.
Guides is lost and the curing doctor melted
قُلsay للخطيبِto the preacher علىbefore الجُموعِthe crowds أفدَتَهمyou benefited them
نُصحاًcounsel ولكنand yet مَنwho عليكَto you خطيبُa preacher
Tell the preacher addressing the crowds: 'You have helped them
Say to the preacher over crowds, have you benefited them
with counsel, but who is there to preach to you?'
With advice, but who upon you is the preacher
إنif لمnot يكُنbe عَملُthe deeds of الخطيبِthe preacher كقولهِlike his words
فَمَنِthen who الذيthe one who يدعوhe calls بهِwith it فيُجيبُand then responds
If the preacher's deeds do not match his words,
If the preacher's work is not like his words
then who will answer the call he makes with them?
Then who is it that calls him and he responds

O you whom we call the Beloved, and who indeed
O you whom we name the beloved, and he
are a man beloved to every heart.
Is a man the beloved of every heart

You have vanished from us into the dust, though it was never
You were absent from us in the soil and it was not
the way of stars to vanish in the dust.
The custom of stars to be absent in the soil

إنif لمnot يكُنbe للعينِfor the eye منكَfrom you نصيبُa share
Might the ear, I wonder, receive a sound from you,
Will the ear win any hearing from you
if the eye has no share of you?
If the eye gets no share from you
ياO غُربةًexile طالتgrew longer عليكَfor you بغُربةٍby an exile
قدalready جُرَّwas dragged فوقَكَover you ذيلُهاits hem المسحوبُtrailing
O exile, prolonged for you by another exile,
O estrangement that lengthened upon you with estrangement
whose trailing hem has been drawn over you.
Its trailing tail pulled over you
فارقتَyou left رَبعاًa dwelling كانَwas يرجوhoping for عوْدةًa return
لمdid not يدرِknow أنَّthat رجاءَهُits hope سيخيبُwill fail
You left a home that hoped for your return;
You left a quarter that hoped for return
it did not know that its hope would fail.
Not knowing its hope would fail
إنif كنتَyou were قدalready سافرتَyou traveled غيرَwithout مُودِّعٍbidding farewell

فقدthen indeed اقتَفَتْكَfollowed you وشَيَّعتْكَand saw you off قُلوبُhearts
If you have departed without bidding farewell,
If you travelled not bidding farewell
then hearts have followed you and seen you off.
Then hearts chased and bade you farewell
فعليكَso upon you منfrom لدُنِthe presence of المُهَيْمنِthe Guardian رحمةٌmercy

So may mercy from the Guardian be upon you,
Upon you from the Overseer is mercy
whose poured-out rain waters your tomb.
Its poured rain waters your tomb

You indeed used to please God according to His Book,
You used to please God as per His Book
so His favor is inscribed for you upon His Tablet.
So satisfaction for you in His Tablet is written
