Separation grew long until hopes were torn apart.

And I wasted away until the heart of wasting sickness pitied me.

And the heart, constricted by longing, could no longer endure,

until it wandered, finding nowhere to rest.

Live on, and meet us like the full moon, O you who resemble it

in distance from us, in wandering, and in radiance.

Indeed, in either state I shall not forget you throughout

my life, even should I almost forget who I am.

I remembered you and trembled with awe,

and was enraptured, so lamentation sprang from song.

So I wept until I could no longer weep for lack

of tears; even tears come to an end.

And I wished I could mourn weeping itself, for it

heals hearts, even if it harms the eyes.

Indeed, I rode poetry until it tired of me,

and I tired of it: I fell short in it, while it excelled.

And the virtues of the Trustworthy Spirit lead me

against my will, wronging me by compelling songs of praise.

A quality that time cannot contain, and a resolve

through which the days have left a chronic disease behind.

    هيهاتِ يَطعنُ كلُّ من حَمَلَ القَنا

    Not everyone who recites poems is a poet;

far from it—not everyone who carries spears can strike.

    Shihab—the meteor—resolved to settle in a place

    one day; Burj—the tower—proved a fitting home.

    ها مَجمَعُ البحرينِ أصبحَ عِندَنا

    Through him, the shore of our sea has itself become a sea;

behold, the meeting place of the two seas is now among us.

Do not envy Egypt the overflowing of its Nile:

the Nile is in Egypt, but his palm is here.

The land lives through him; were you to congratulate him

on it one day, it would say, “Joy to us and to you!”

A noble man: when time ravages its people,

he is shielded by a soul that indecency does not tempt.

And when he amasses wealth, he is like a merchant

seeking to sell at once, as quickly as he can.

Nobility rests in the very heart of gentleness,

which has taken a commendable path toward it.

And graces like those ascribed to the breeze

have sought shelter in the shade of might.

O pillar of the rule of the House of Qaysṣ, now turns

Qays toward you, against Yaman, seeking good fortune.

    Tanukh was its left arm

of old, and you were its right arm.

Delegations sought refuge in your courtyard and pressed together,

like the pilgrims crowding the valley of Mina.

    وعليكَ كلُّ مُعَوَّلٍ وبكَ الغِنى

    In you is hope, and from you comes every honor;

all reliance rests upon you, and through you comes prosperity.
