Restrain your tears, O weeper, for
Stop your tears, o you who cry, for tears
Tears neither quench a blaze nor slake thirst.
Do not quench the flames nor water the thirst.

Know that tears become embers
If they touch embers kindled in your heart.
If they touch embers in your blazing heart.

How many tears have been wasted through time, flowing
How many tears are wasted in time, flowing
In vain! No wonder—for how much blood has been wasted!
In vain, and no wonder, for how much blood is wasted.

If weeping has been wasted, then do not waste
If crying is wasted, then do not waste
Time on weeping; that is the greater gain.
The time of crying, for that is the best gain.

Everything passes into extinction, as we see,
All things fade away as we see,
Until time almost extinguishes the stars.
Until time almost makes the stars fade away.

None is free of sorrows in this world except
In life, none misses worries, except
A heart bereft of loved ones.
A heart that is devoid of loved ones.

If you cannot accept parting from a friend,
If you do not accept separation from a friend,
Then leave this world with him, and be the sanctuary's guardian.
Then leave with him, and guard your sanctuary.

An illness, old in life, and
Cure for the disease is hoped for once it takes firm hold.
No hope to cure the disease when it becomes chronic.

And when decay afflicts a vessel by its very nature,
And if corruption afflicts the circumstance by itself,
How can one hope that what it holds will remain unharmed?
How is there hope for it to be safe?

So make consolation food for yourself,
So make solace for yourself a place to eat,
And compound a salve from purified patience.
And make from pure patience an ointment.

You would give a dinar to get a dirham of patience.
