    لكنَّ حمدي قاصرٌ دُونَ الوَفا

    Praise be to God, who created humankind;

Yet my praise falls short of what is due.

Praise be to God, who decrees whatever

He wills; but there is no reversing what He decreed.

We have come to blame time for its happenings,

And time is but a vessel between morning and evening.

What do you think this age is beside Him who

Created time, and who is established upon the Throne?

God is greatest! All that is above the soil

Will perish; only your Lord's face remains.

And when you see that resentment is of no avail

Against what He decreed, embrace gracious acceptance.

We came into the world when it had grown gray from

Snatching souls, yet had not relinquished youthful zeal.

Had any living being before us endured within it,

I would have hoped to gain safety and lasting life from it.

We walk toward the dead upon their bodies,

Worn away in the earth like scattered dust.

If it were possible to sort through our earth,

You would find half its soil to be decayed remains.

Far from it! This world is no lasting home,

Only a traveler's halt in the darkness.

It joins meeting to parting; and apart from that,

There comes a parting no reunion follows.

And indeed I say to one departing from his home:

What have you taken, and what have you left of the heart?

These hearts are a trust in your keeping; guard them,

O best of those who preserve a trust and loyal love!

Peace from us be upon you wherever you settle, in

The lands' east or west; and praise be yours.

That white hand—should we forget what

It planted, the tender fruit would remind us of it.

Our longing for you endures; but have we

Patience to endure it, if the time grows long?

You have left lonely a house you used to cheer; and if

It had an eye, it would overflow with tears.

O noble chief and head of our assembly,

Will you remember its members after parting?

O you of the sound heart, and of the

    Handsome face, as though it were the eye of morning;

O you of the wakeful, clear gaze, and pure in

    Unsullied honor, like the blossoms of the hills;

O gallant, seasoned man, possessor of the

Refined character, and the chosen vessel!

Words have grown too narrow for us; is there any bounty

To flow upon us from you, O shower of dew?

You have left us unable to thank you for your favor, whose

Truth the angels of heaven have attested.

From you, O blossom of the gardens, is there a fragrant breath

To be sent us today upon the east wind?

And may the pillar of dawn cast over us

    Shades steeped in the essences of fragrance;

And may the treasuries of shells scatter among us

Pearls with which wrists and necks are adorned.

With them we pay praise's due to him who fulfilled

What was due to God and His creatures, in fullest measure.

O company of friends, which of your men

Has departed, and which of your hearts remains here?

    لكنَّهُ بحرٌ على بحرٍ مَشَى

    Do not think a man has taken his place aboard a ship;

Rather, he is a sea that has walked upon a sea.

    أفتعلَمُونَ مَتى يكونُ المُلتَقَى

    This is a parting whose time you know;

Do you then know when the reunion will be?

This full moon has now inclined toward its setting,

But he will rise again; so aid him with your prayers.
