Peace upon Wadi al-Arak and Hajir,

And every gazelle there, tame and shy.

Abodes where we have neighbors among the Arabs,

Noble as neighbors, from noble clans.

The bond of union has indeed changed for us and them,

Yet love's bond between our hearts has not changed.

Each flash of lightning brings them back to mind,

From the encampment, seeking rain from the clouds of my eyes.

And I pine for gazelles that swayed upon the dune,

Assailing with the lashes of their bewitching eyes.

    فَوَيلاهُ من فَتْك الجفونِ الفواترِ

    Languid-lidded, they have dealt my heart a deathblow;

So woe to me for the deadly assault of languid eyelids!

Upon them lies the gilded embroidery of cloaks,

Gleaming above a dazzling embroidery of beauty.

So I was charmed by both embroideries, until there shone forth

A maiden of beauty, exalted beyond all peers.

Of Nizar, of Najd, of Rabi'ah,

She wears a robe of the inkwells' embroidery.

She came to me from the direction of al-Husayn and revealed

Charms of grace that stirred longing in every beholder.

She revealed the purity of his inner heart and confirmed

A genuine affection, hidden within him yet manifest.

May God water Najd; and peace, again and again,

Upon Najd's land, from one end to the other.

    نَعَمْ إنَّ نجداً مَعدِنٌ للذَّخائِرِ

    Behold, Najd is indeed a mine of treasures;

Yes, Najd is indeed a mine of treasures.

For all time, among the legacies of Bakr and Taghlib,

Is an outpouring of renown, circulating in assemblies.

Ah, how lovely a gentle breeze from Najd's land,

And a draught of water from Shubayth of the wild calves!

And oh, how lovely the water of al-Jifar, and how lovely

The abodes of Tamim and neighboring Iraq!

I yearn for those lands and their remembrance,

Despite their distance, with a traveling stranger's longing.

And I indeed possess a body halved by wasting sickness,

And a sound heart, its judgment complete and abundant.

    وإنَّ الأماني مِنْ تَعلَّةِ قاصِرِ

    Many are my wishes, but few do I attain;

And indeed, wishes are a solace for one who falls short.

I am steadfast under affliction and patient; and indeed I

Can do nothing but strive to be patient.

And no doubt patience is bitter to taste

As it enters the soul, but sweet in its outcomes.
