O dwellings of Usfan, may all dwellings be your ransom!

Will those nights of old return?

And have the gazelles of the ban trees, since we left,

grown tame, or are they, as before, quick to flee?

May dew water those abodes, even though

a downpour of streaming tears has given me drink there.

Lightning over the encampment sets my tears flowing late at night,

and the east wind and north winds set my sighs ablaze.

When the hands of passion possess a lover’s heart,

then the scolding women’s words matter least of all.

And sweetest in life are loved ones

who visit you, or whose letters reach you.

    لهُ ولها حقَّتْ عليَّ فَواصِلُ

    A learned man’s letter came to me unannounced;

to him and to it I owe rhymed tributes.

Verses with braziers of longing within them,

yet for me they are watering places of solace.

They played upon my heart when they alighted on my hearing,

as grammatical agents play upon inflected words.

I recalled al-Hariri, whose qualities, here among us today,

    shine forth in al-Sufi.

His are verse and prose, delightful in their wording

and subtle in meaning, embracing all beauty.

We credited him with noble deeds, guided

by truth, since the proofs stood clear before us.

He races ahead toward the goals; I have fallen short of him.

And how can a man on foot rival a horseman?

He graciously bestowed the praise he himself deserves—

a generous man who reaches the summit of nobility.

And he praised me with his own qualities, so it was as though

he were thereby speaking to himself, unaware.

Praise I deem false; yet I

would find it shameful to say, “That is false.”

    وكم من سكوتٍ قد تمنَّاهُ قائِلُ

    So I keep silent about both, out of courtesy;

and many a speaker has wished for silence.
