    إنَّ المَلاحةَ للعُيُونِ النُعَّسِ

    Lower your eyelids, O eyes of the narcissus;

indeed, loveliness belongs to drowsy eyes.

Do not gaze upon the beloved's face, for often

it has bewitched eyes and made heads bow.

If this rose resembles his cheek,

why did it seek shade beneath his sleeve at the gathering?

And if the tawny spears claim his stature,

they speak truly—but where is his softness to the touch?

A young gazelle appearing in fine satin,

like the full moon rising in the starless sky.

The choicest wine envied his lips; abashed

by his radiant beauty was fine silk's embroidery.

His facial down wove upon his cheek's broad planes

chain mail to shield him from a keen observer's eyes.

And flame blazed within him and said to his mouth:

“Let the thirsty not hope for the coolness of the cups.”

O you whose cheeks showed me a page

that was for me the letter of al-Mutalammis.

I resented a rebuff from a beloved who brought loneliness,

then found a reply from a beloved who brought comfort.

    تَرَكَ الحِجارةَ كالجواري الكُنَّسِ

    The beloved returned home one evening;

he left the stones like stars that course and hide.

He cast upon them his surplus radiance, as

you cover a companion with the trailing hem of a burnous.

A noble branch, delightful; and indeed,

the goodness of branches depends on the goodness of their soil.

Poetry glories in him, and its verse grows sweet,

so it goes forth, now with inserted half-lines, now in five-part stanzas.

Ailments fell in love with him, having witnessed

the hearts' passion for him and the souls' love.

If the ailing man could find healing in himself,

his gentle qualities would spare him the need for Rufus.

This is the son of Musa, of undying fame, whose

name in every volume has remained unerased.

A relic through whom we sought blessing after him,

like one of the relics of Jerusalem.

O man whose heart is sound,

you are the snakebitten one, and so are ever under watch.

May you ever remain beyond every calamity's power,

like speech upon a mute man's tongue.
