للشِعرِfor poetry فيin كُلِّevery عصرٍage مَرْكبٌa mount خَشِنُrough
لاnot يَستَقِلُّsits firmly عليهِupon it الرَّاكبُthe rider الوَهِنُfeeble
In every age, poetry has a rough mount,
Poetry in every age has a rough mount
on which the feeble rider cannot sit firmly.
That the weak rider cannot control
يَغُرُّplays false بالفارسِwith the horseman الطاغيheadstrong فيرَكَبُهُso he rides it
لكنْbut تَرَدِّيِهِhis falling عنهُfrom it لَيسَis not يُؤْتَمَنُconsidered safe
It plays false with the headstrong horseman, who then rides it,
The tyrant is tempted by it and rides it
yet he cannot be sure of not falling from it.
But restraining it from him is not to be trusted
غارَraided الرِّجالُthe men علىagainst أبياتِهِits verses طَمعَاًout of greed
فكانَso it was أكثرَهُمmost of them منof حَظِّهِhis share الدِمَنُdung heaps
Men raided its verses out of greed,
Men swarmed to its verses out of greed
so most of them had dung heaps for their share.
Yet most of them got only a little from it
نَعُدُّwe count منهمamong them ألوفاًthousands ماthere is no بهاamong them حَسَنٌgood one
حَتَّىuntil يُصادَفَis encountered منهمamong them واحدٌone حَسَنُgood
We count thousands of them, with not a good one among them,
We count them in thousands without merit
until a single good one among them is found.
Until one of merit is found
إنَّindeed الجميلَthe beautiful قليلٌscarce عَزَّis difficult مَطلَبُهُits attainment
منamong كُلِّall ماthat which تَشتهيهِdesires it العينُthe eye والأُذُنُand the ear
The beautiful is rare indeed, hard to attain,
Beauty is rare and hard to obtain
among all that the eye and ear desire.
Of all that the eye and ear desire
فلاso you do not تَرىsee مِنamong حَصَىpebbles الياقُوتِrubies واحدةًa single one
حَتَّىuntil تَرَىyou see ألْفَa thousand صَخْرٍrocks ماthere is no لهُfor it ثَمَنُvalue
So you do not see a single ruby pebble
You will not see even one ruby
until you have seen a thousand rocks worth nothing.
Until you see a thousand worthless rocks
هذاthis هُوَit is الأمَدُthe goal الأقَصىthe furthest الذيwhich قَصُرَتfell short
عنهُof it الجِيادُthoroughbred horses وكَلَّتْand grew weary دُونَهُshort of it الهُجُنُcrossbred horses
This is the furthest goal, beyond the reach
This is the farthest goal that fell short
of thoroughbreds; crossbred horses tire before reaching it.
Of the steeds and the mules fell short of it
فيin كلِّevery فَنٍّart سِواهُother than it كُلُّeach طائفةٍgroup
قَلَّis slight التَّفاوُتُdisparity فيهاwithin it حينَwhen تَقْتَرِنُis compared
In every art besides it, each group
In every other art but this
shows little disparity when its members are compared.
Little variation when they are paired
أناI الخبيرُthe one well versed بماin what فيamong القَومِthe people منof سَخَفٍfolly
لاnot يَجهَلُis ignorant of السُّقمَillness مَنwhoever بالسُّقمِby illness يُمتَحَنُis tested
I am well versed in the folly among these men:
I know best what foolishness is in the people
one tested by illness is not ignorant of illness.
Who is sick is known by being tested with sickness
واللهُand God يَعلمُknows أنَّthat الصَمْتَsilence أجمَلُmore becoming بيto me
لولاwere it not for حُقوقٌobligations بِهِنَّby them القَلبُthe heart مُرْتَهَنُheld in pledge
And God knows that silence better befits me,
God knows that silence is more beautiful for me
were it not for obligations that hold my heart in pledge.
If not for rights which make the heart indebted
عَلَيَّowed by me مالاwhat ... not أُكافيهِI repay it بصُنعِwith the work of يدٍa hand
فقدthen perhaps أُكافيهِI repay it مِمَّاfrom what تَصَنعُfashion اللُسُنُtongues
What I owe, but cannot repay with a hand's work,
What I cannot repay with the work of hands
I may repay with what tongues fashion:
I can repay with what tongues make
مَدائحٌpraises هيَthey are فرضٌa duty لاno انفِكاكَrelease لهُfrom it
عِنديfor me وماand what دُونَهاbesides them الأنفالُvoluntary offerings والسُنَنُand customary observances
praises are an inescapable duty
Eulogies are an obligation I cannot avoid
for me; all else counts as voluntary offerings and customary observances.
To me, less than them are supererogations and traditions
أسُوقُهاI lead them نحوَtoward بابٍa gate شادَbuilt دَولَتهُhis dominion
مُلْكُroyal power العِراقِIraq وشادَتand built مَجدَهُhis glory اليَمَنُYemen
I lead them toward a gate whose dominion was built
I lead them to a door whose state is erected
by Iraq's royal power, and whose glory Yemen built.
By the rule of Iraq and its glory erected by Yemen
غريبةٌforeign حُيثُماwherever حَلَّتthey settle فإنْyet if نَزَلَتْthey lodge
بِدارِهِin his house فهُناكَthen there الأهلُthe kin والوَطَنُand the homeland
They are strangers wherever they settle; yet if they lodge
Strange wherever they settle, and if they alight
in his house, there are their kin and homeland.
In his abode, there are the family and homeland
