If the elegist were just and followed right guidance,

he would devote his lament to himself, and begin with himself.

So shed a thousand tears at once for yourself,

O you who wept a single tear for your brother.

    ولَقَد يكونُ اليومَ ذلكَ أَو غَدا

    Bid your brother farewell, girding yourself for his road;

and that may well be today or tomorrow.

    إنَّ المُوَفَّقَ من يَسيرُ مُزوَّدا

    The fortunate one is not he who sets out later;

indeed, the fortunate one is he who sets out well-provisioned.

O builder of a beautiful palace for a brief while,

rise and build a grave you will possess forever.

O sleeper upon the bed, you have been heedless of

a cave that will be your resting place until the Resurrection.

O gatherer of wealth, will you depart with it?

And when you have departed, will you stretch out a hand toward it?

O man of high rank, who must inevitably

remain a captive, fettered in the tomb,

rise, let us identify the dead man who has tasted decay:

was he a serving slave or a master?

Who was of bewitching beauty, and who, I wonder,

is that hero who vanquished the foe?

Where are those who lorded it over the people

and defiantly overran the farthest lands?

All have become like dust, so you see

neither a soul nor a trace visible to the eye.

An abode where the raven of parting croaks—

it has circled above our heads, coming and going.

It fears neither king nor lion nor

cub—for death has overtaken this cub.
