اذاif أعيتproves beyond one's power مكأفأةُrepayment of الجميلِa kindness
فلاthen do not تَغفُلْbe heedless عنof الشُّكرthanks الجزيلِabundant
If repaying a kindness proves beyond your power,
If the reward of kindness ever fails,
then do not neglect abundant thanks.
Do not neglect to offer abundant thanks.
وأوفَىand the fullest الشُّكرِthanks ماwhat أعلنتَyou proclaim خَطّاًin writing
فذاكَfor that يدومُendures جيلاًa generation بعدafter جيلِa generation
And the fullest thanks are those you proclaim in writing,
The best thanks is when you pen a line -
for that endures, generation after generation.
For it endures for generations to come.
عليَّI owe ديونُdebts شكرٍof gratitude ليسَare not تُقضىrepaid
لوeven if قُسمَتthey were apportioned علىover دهرٍa span of time طويلِlong
I owe debts of gratitude that cannot be repaid,
I owe debts of gratitude that can't be repaid,
even if spread over a long span of time.
Even if allotted over a lengthy lifetime.
ولكنand yet ربُّهاtheir creditor سَمْحٌgracious كريمٌgenerous
فيعَذِرُنيso he excuses me ويَرضَىand is content بالقليلِwith little
And yet their creditor is gracious and generous,
But their Lord is forgiving and generous,
so he excuses me and is content with little.
So He pardons me and is pleased with little.
علىupon القدسِJerusalem الشَّريفِthe noble لناfor us سلامٌa greeting
يُرَدَّدُis repeated فيin الصَّباحِthe morning وفيand in الأصيلِthe late afternoon
Our greeting to noble Jerusalem
Peace be upon noble Jerusalem -
is repeated in the morning and in the late afternoon.
Echoed morning and night without cease.
لقدindeed نزلَhas lodged الشَّريفُthe noble one علىwith شريفٍa noble one
فأكرِمْhow noble, then بالمَنازِلِare the lodgings والنَّزِيلِand the guest
Indeed, the noble one has lodged with a noble one;
The noble one descended upon the noble,
how noble, then, are the lodgings and the guest!
So honor the dwellings and the visitor.
رسولٌa messenger لوif جَهِلناwe did not know مُرسِليهِthose who sent him
أراناwould show us فضلَهمtheir excellence فضلُthe excellence of الرَّسولِthe messenger
A messenger—if we did not know those who sent him,
A messenger - even if we don't know his sender -
the messenger's excellence would reveal their excellence to us.
Shows us their merit through the messenger's merit.
وهلand can يَخفَىbe hidden الصَّباحُmorning علىfrom بصيرٍone who sees
فيحتاجَso it should need النَّهارُdaylight إلىfor دليلِproof
And can morning be hidden from one who sees,
Does the dawn stay hidden to one with vision,
so that daylight should need proof?
Requiring the daytime as guide?
لناfor us منfrom فَيضِthe overflow of غَيرتهِhis zeal رِواقٌa canopy
نَعِمناwe have lived at ease منهُfrom it فيin ظِلٍّshade ظليلِdeep
From the overflow of his zeal, we have a canopy;
From the overflow of His fervent zeal we have
through it we have lived at ease in deep shade.
A courtyard in which we take shade and shelter.
يَفيضُoverflows بكلِّeach عامٍyear نيلُthe Nile of مِصرٍEgypt
ومنهُand from him كُلَّevery يومٍday فيضُthe flood of نيلِa Nile
Egypt's Nile overflows each year,
Like Egypt's Nile overflowing each year,
and from him each day comes a Nile's flood.
From it comes a flood each day without fail.
وليسَand is not الجودُgenerosity بالأموالwith wealth جوداًgenerosity
ولكنbut rather بالبَشاشةِwith cheerfulness والقَبُولِand welcome
And generosity lies not in giving wealth,
True generosity is not in wealth,
but in cheerfulness and welcome.
But in amiability and acceptance.
إذاif كانis الكريمُthe generous man عَبُوسَgrim of وجهٍface
فماthen how أحلَىsweet البَشاشَةَcheerfulness فيin البخيلِthe miser
If a generous man is grim-faced,
If the generous wears a sullen face,
then how sweet is cheerfulness in a miser!
How sweet is amiability in one stingy!
