علىfor الذيthe one who مِثلَهُhis equal فيamong النَّاسِpeople لاnot أجِدُI find
على الذي مِثلَهُ في النَّاسِ لا أجِدُ
I have reserved my praise—let no one covet it—
for him whose equal I cannot find among men.

لكنّني غيرَ وِرْدِ الحَقِّ لا أرِدُ
My praise of him is not out of love or honor,
but I approach no watering place except that of truth.

It is a disgrace to me if I recite a verse
in praise of another, or my hand writes it with the reed pen.

And whoever performs dry ablution where water gushes
has indeed lost prudence and good sense.

This is he with whom poetry, through his refinement,
enjoys esteem; with others, its lot is sorrow.

Can one who thinks poetry a cryptic spell be equal
to one who masters its meanings and judges it critically?

When we write a verse for him upon the page,
it almost flies to him, striving eagerly.

And if we travel from afar to visit him,
we fancy the town hurrying toward us, so near it seems.

Before the people's prince, even their greatest is humbled;
yet before him, the lowliest visitor is raised.

فلا يَشوقُهُمُ أهلٌ ولا وَلَدُ
His generosity makes guests forget their homes,
so neither family nor child awakens their longing.

knots almost come undone at the mention of his name.

If he converses with people, we say, 'He is an angel';
or if he joins battle, we say, 'He is a lion.'

حَتَّى تَعجَّبَ منهُ الصَّبرُ والجَلَدُ
He has practiced patience through the days with fortitude,
until patience and fortitude themselves marveled at him.

Thus, in his might, he attained what the soul desires,
yet the days gained nothing from him to soothe their liver.

The sons of Raslan have had their dominion renewed
by al-Amin's hand, which draws strength from God.

the flanks of earth's inhabitants began to tremble.

for I have feared that envy might harm me.

You raised my standing through the deed you performed,
for whose like pillars ought to be raised.

yesterday—and today and tomorrow are joined to it.

I ask God's forgiveness: time has grown long, and still
I have not fully rendered the thanks I had counted on.

I balanced your greatest favor against it, number for number,
until it towered so high that weighing and counting were lost.

And sometimes the man praised helps his praiser,
when he is worthy of the praise that comes.

stretching unbroken before the eye like a straight path.
