طَفَحَoverflowed الإناءُthe vessel فكادَso it nearly أنْto يَتَصدَّعاsplit apart
Gratitude to you has left no room in my heart.
Your gratitude no longer has a place in my heart,
The vessel has overflowed and nearly split apart.
The cup overflowed until it almost cracked.
لكَyou have كلَّevery يومٍday مِنَّةٌa favor وصَنيعةٌand a kindness
عنfrom مَحضِpure وُدٍّaffection لمnot يكنْwas مُتصنِّعاfeigned
Each day you bestow a favor and a kindness,
For you every day there is a favor and kindness,
From pure affection that was never feigned.
Out of pure affection, not pretense.
المرءُa person يُعطيgives النَّاسpeople فَضلَةthe surplus قلبهِhis heart
وأراكَand I see you قدindeed أعطيتَyou have given قلبَكَyour heart أجمَعاentire
A man gives others the surplus of his heart,
A person gives people the excess of his heart,
And I see you have given your heart entire.
Yet I see you have given your whole heart.
لمnot ألقْI find فيهِin it حَبَّةًa grain مِنof جِرْمِهِits substance
إلاّexcept that وجدتُI found مِنof المحبَّةِlove أربَعاfour
I never found in it a grain of its substance
I did not find in it an atom of sin,
Without finding four grains of love.
Except that I found four times as much love.
أنتَyou المُحبُّthe lover الصَّادِقُsincere الدَّعوىthe claim كماjust as
أنتَyou الحبيبُthe beloved فقدso indeed جمعتَهُماyou united them both مَعَاtogether
You are the lover, sincere in your claim, just as
You are the true loving claimant, as
You are the beloved: you have united both together.
You are the beloved, so you have joined them both together.
أشهدتَyou called to witness ليfor me ألفاًa thousand بذاكَto that وإنَّماand yet
فيin الشَّاهِدَيْنِthe two witnesses كفايةٌsufficiency لِمَنِfor whoever ادَّعَىmakes a claim
You have called a thousand witnesses to that for me, yet
You have testified to me a thousand times, but
Two witnesses alone suffice for anyone who makes a claim.
Two witnesses suffice for one claiming.
ليسَnot الجميلُthe kindness لمنْfor whoever أحبَّloves مُكافِئاًin repayment
إنَّindeed الجميلَthe kindness لِمنْfor whoever أحبَّloves تَبَرُّعاfreely
Credit is not due to one who loves in return;
Beauty is not for one who loved an equal,
Credit is due to one who loves freely,
Beauty is for one who loved selflessly.
ولِمَنْand for whoever أقامَremains steadfast علىin المودَّةِaffection حافظاًpreserving
حقّاًa right لِمنْfor whoever نكثَbroke العُهودَthe pledges وضيَّعاand squandered
And to one who remains steadfast in affection, preserving
And for one who kept his affection steadfast,
A right owed to one who broke the pledges and cast them aside.
Truly for one who broke pacts and wasted them.
أعنيكَI mean you ياO مَنone who لاnot أُصرِّحُI reveal باسمهِhis name
خوفَfor fear الكتابِthe letter يطيرُflies نحوَكَtoward you مُسرِعاswiftly
I mean you, O one whose name I do not reveal,
I mean you, O one whose name I do not profess
For fear the letter might fly swiftly toward you.
Fearing the letter will fly to you hurriedly.
ماnot شِمتُI saw قبلكَbefore you مَنone who يَزيدُincreases علىbeyond المدَىthe limit
حبّاًin love إذاwhen ضاقَgrew narrow الزَّمانُthe times توَسَّعاgrew expansive
Before you, I never saw one who surpassed all bounds
Before you I never sensed one who exceeded in passion,
In love, expanding when the times grew narrow.
Love, when times were straitened, you made them expansive.
إنif لمnot يكُنْbe كَرَمُgenerosity النُّفوسِof souls وطيبُهاand their goodness
فيin المرءِa person طبعاًan innate disposition لاnot يكونُbe تَطَبُّعاan acquired disposition
If generosity and goodness of soul are not
If generosity and goodness of soul
Innate in a person, they cannot be acquired.
Are not innate in a person, they will not become habit.
هيهاتِfar from it ليسَnot تصيرُbecomes رُمحاًa spear نَبْلةٌan arrow
مهماhowever much استَطالَgrew long قَوامُهاits shaft وتَفرَّعاand branched out
Far from it! An arrow does not become a spear,
Far from it! An arrow cannot become a spear
However long its shaft grows and branches out.
No matter how tall it is or how branched it becomes.
