وأعظمُand the greatest الحبِّlove فيهِwithin it حُبُّlove of دُنياهُits worldly life
Every heart has a beloved whom it keeps loving,
And the greatest love within it is love of its worldly life.

فذاكَfor that one يُبقِىkeeps هواهاlove for it طيَّwithin the folds of أحشاهُhis innermost being
And every lovesick lover will find solace, save the lover of worldly life;
For he keeps his love for it folded deep within him.

فالكلُّfor all قبلَbefore اختبارِthe test of النَّقْدِscrutiny أشباهُalike
People have cloaked themselves in virtue and grown alike;
For all look alike before critical examination.
ومَنْand whoever تَصدَّىcomes forward لدعَوىwith a claim دونwithout بيِّنةٍevidence
لصدقِهِof his truthfulness سَقَطَتْcollapses فيin الحالِthe present moment دَعواهُhis claim
And whoever advances a claim without evidence
Of his truthfulness—his claim collapses at once.

And people are of two kinds: one is flesh enclosing blood,
And the other, still in his original state, is clay and water.

And some are eloquence, refinement, and wit;
And some are babbling tongues and mouths.

People have taken up poetry in turn: some came
With its wording, while others came with its meaning.

Like a mine from which some of us obtained gold,
While others obtained dust from its remnants.

Indeed, trials are an assay of men; how often
A companion has deceived us until we tested him!

And we have found no company like Banu Raslan,
Who cherish a friend's affection and never forget him.

A people whose noble character comes from their forebears,
As one bequeaths a house for a descendant to dwell in.

They built a tower of glory upon pillars,
And Mulhim added a palace to it and raised it high.

An ancient glory, whose wet nurse was Bahra,
Between the two Iraqs; al-Nu'man nurtured it.

It is no wonder if the first rank comes
From the mighty state to his abode.

Through his rightful rule and justice, which it approves.

The head's honor extends to all the limbs;
So too is the ruler with his subjects.
