Do you know what cares she stirred within my heart—

A secluded maiden who captivates with her kohl-dark lashes?

A human gazelle, not a gazelle of the herd,

She grazed on the heart's kernel, not the sands' arfaj shrubs.

She came to me from al-Zawara, trailing her hem,

Coquettishly, increasing longing's burning thirst through union.

I offered her a bride's dowry of jewels,

Yet she refused it out of reverence, so I dowered her with my reason.

A foster-child of beauty, she made me her foster-child,

And how sweet the honor I gained in being her like!

We gained her through the bounty of the most generous sender

To us; among us she became the noblest of messengers.

He is the indivisible substance, whose person is defined

By the kind of his virtues, not by genus and differentia.

The conclusion of an age, unmatched in his excellence,

Sound in his propositions, true in subject and predicate.

He is al-Umari, the illustrious lord whose

Honor is preserved in the branch, inherited from the root.

If indeed al-Faruq had left no one but him

As offspring, he would have spared his people the need for many descendants.

He rose until he was higher than al-Suha,

And overflowed until he flowed more freely than heavy rain.

More illuminating in calamities than the morning light,

And his hand, in difficulties, is keener than a blade.

Pens fall prostrate before him, their heads bowed,

So he grants them glory over the most piercing arrows.

They hunt meanings, favorable quarry after unfavorable quarry,

As the hunter stood where pathways meet.

His favor towers over me, and his bounty

Rises above my head like a towering palm.

    فأقعَدها وِقرٌ جديدٌ من الفَضلِ

    When I seek to thank him for his bounty, I rouse my resolve;

Then a fresh weight of bounty brings it back down.

He cast his glance over a portion of my feeble poetry,

Then bestowed praise on it, so it rose above all the rest.

Each couplet saw itself as a whole poem,

So what had held it before grew too narrow for it.

Through you, O Kaaba of glory, a fragment took pride,

Having withdrawn to the farthest place from ignorance.

It says: ‘A witness like him suffices me; if

You dare, then say he is not an upright witness.’

God decreed the separation that came between us,

And from whom but Him can we hope for the cord to be rejoined?

I see lofty mountains between us, and above them

Mountains of longing, their shade spreading wide.

They fashion for us separation's lament with the hand of love,

So our pens run on, and our longings dictate.
