A fire—and what could tell you what my fire is?

A fire your love fans into flame like a Yemeni wind.

لا تُنكِروا أن ذابَ قلبي دُونَها

لا تُنكِروا أن ذابَ قلبي دُونَها

لو أنَّهُ جَبَلٌ لأصَبحَ وادِيا

لو أنَّهُ جَبَلٌ لأصَبحَ وادِيا

Do not marvel that my heart has melted before it;

Were it a mountain, it would have become a valley.

طالَ الزمانُ وما ظَفِرتُ بطائلٍ

طالَ الزمانُ وما ظَفِرتُ بطائلٍ

وصبَرتُ حتى ملَّ صبري عاصيا

وصبَرتُ حتى ملَّ صبري عاصيا

Time has dragged on, yet I have gained nothing worthwhile.

And I endured until my patience grew weary and rebelled.

ورَضيِتُ بالطَّيْفِ المُلِمِّ فخانني

ورَضيِتُ بالطَّيْفِ المُلِمِّ فخانني

نومي فصرْتُ بذِكرِ طيفِكَ رَاضيا

نومي فصرْتُ بذِكرِ طيفِكَ رَاضيا

I was content with the visiting dream-vision, but I was betrayed

by my sleep; so I became content with remembering your dream-vision.

يا كوكباً قد غابَ عنا أولاً

يا كوكباً قد غابَ عنا أولاً

وَيلاهُ هل يُرجىَ طُلوعُكَ ثانيا

وَيلاهُ هل يُرجىَ طُلوعُكَ ثانيا

O star that vanished from us once before,

Alas! Is there hope that you will rise again?

أهوَى لوَجِهكَ كلَّ نجمٍ طالعٍ

أهوَى لوَجِهكَ كلَّ نجمٍ طالعٍ

ويبيتُ طَرْفي للكواكبِ راعيا

ويبيتُ طَرْفي للكواكبِ راعيا

For your face's sake, I love every rising star,

And my eye spends the night keeping watch over the stars.

إن كانَ ما بُلّغِتَ عني كاذِباً

إن كانَ ما بُلّغِتَ عني كاذِباً

فغداً سيصدُقُ ليسَ حَيٌّ باقيا

فغداً سيصدُقُ ليسَ حَيٌّ باقيا

If what you have been told about me is false,

Then tomorrow it will prove true: no living soul lasts forever.

وفِراقُ من أَحبَبْتَ موتٌ عاجلٌ

وفِراقُ من أَحبَبْتَ موتٌ عاجلٌ

للعاشِقينَ فلا تكذِّبْ ناعيا

للعاشِقينَ فلا تكذِّبْ ناعيا

And parting from the one you love is instant death

for lovers; so do not disbelieve a bearer of news of death.
