أبكى الشُّيوخَ بَنِي تلحوقَ مرتحِلٌ

أبكى الشُّيوخَ بَنِي تلحوقَ مرتحِلٌ

منهم كريمٌ مِن الأشرافِ معدودُ

منهم كريمٌ مِن الأشرافِ معدودُ

A departed man made the sheikhs of Bani Talhuq weep,

A man of the nobles is departing from Talhuq,

A generous man of their own, counted among the nobles.

A generous man of high lineage.

ناحَت عليه جِيادُ الخيل عابِسَةً

ناحَت عليه جِيادُ الخيل عابِسَةً

والسَّيفُ والضَّيفُ والإكرامُ والجودُ

والسَّيفُ والضَّيفُ والإكرامُ والجودُ

The noble steeds mourned him, grim-faced,

The horses neigh mournfully for him,

As did the sword, the guest, hospitality, and generosity.

As do the sword, the guest, generosity, and munificence.

عزيزُ قومٍ شديدُ البأسِ مقتَدِرٌ

عزيزُ قومٍ شديدُ البأسِ مقتَدِرٌ

عظيمُ شأنٍ لهُ بالفضلِ مشهودُ

عظيمُ شأنٍ لهُ بالفضلِ مشهودُ

Esteemed among his people, fierce in battle, mighty,

A mighty man of a fierce people, powerful,

Great in standing, his merit acknowledged.

Of great repute for his virtues.

وأسطُرُ اللَّوحِ مِن تأريخهِ نَطَقَتْ

وأسطُرُ اللَّوحِ مِن تأريخهِ نَطَقَتْ

محمودُ عند كرامِ النَّاسِ محمودُ

محمودُ عند كرامِ النَّاسِ محمودُ

And the tablet's lines proclaimed his chronogram:

And the lines of inscription from his memorial proclaimed:

Mahmud is praised among men of honor.

"Praised among the generous people, praised!"
