أياO دَهرTime ماwhat هذاthis لَناfor us مِنكَfrom you مرةonce
أيا دَهر ما هذا لَنا مِنكَ مرة
عَثَرتyou stumbled فَاِقصَيتso you banished الحَبيبthe beloved المُحبباthe dearly loved
عَثَرت فَاِقصَيت الحَبيب المُحببا
O Time, what is this you have done to us? Once
you stumbled and banished the dearly loved beloved.
وَاِبدَلتَنيand you gave me instead منone whom لاnot احبI love دنوَهhis nearness
وَاِبدَلتَني من لا احب دنوَه
وَاِسقَيتَنيand you gave me to drink صَباbitter sap (probable intended reading) منَinstead of العَذبِthe sweet مشرَباa draught
وَاِسقَيتَني صَبا منَ العَذبِ مشرَبا
And you gave me instead one whose nearness I do not love,
And made me drink bitter sap instead of a sweet draught.
