Layla shunned you when passion overwhelmed you.

And far too late—love had come before the shunning.

And I have not seen Layla since she stood for an hour

at the Khayf of Mina, casting the pebbles of al-Muhassab.

And whenever she cast the pebbles, they revealed

from her cloak the tips of her henna-stained fingers.

And this morning, as for Layla, I was like one gazing

at dawn in the wake of a setting star.

A night at al-Ghayl, O Umm Malik, refused

anything for you but sincere love that does not lie.

Ah, you have left behind, O Umm Malik, only

a lifeless husk: wherever the wind takes it, it goes.

And no pale doe whose fawn has fallen asleep

at the lower edge of a pool with [perhaps arar flowers] and hullab

is lovelier than Layla, nor a wild cow with a calf,

downcast-eyed, whom I startled amid [unclear text, perhaps a herd].
