أبانت عن مساوىء منشئها
وأغنتand made sufficient بالسماعthrough hearing عنinstead of العيانِseeing firsthand
وأغنت بالسماع عن العيانِ
It revealed the faults of its creator,
And makes hearing suffice over seeing
And made hearing suffice instead of seeing firsthand.
Like a paradise containing luscious fruits
كفردوسlike a paradise حوىcontained ثمراًfruit شهياًluscious
كفردوس حوى ثمراً شهياً
وأكثرهand most of it يُمِرُّtastes bitter علىon اللسانِthe tongue
وأكثره يُمِرُّ على اللسانِ
Like a paradise containing luscious fruit,
Most of which leave bitterness on the tongue
Yet most of it tastes bitter on the tongue.
And bring confusion to the mind of its reader
وتُورِثُand brings عقلَthe mind of قارئهاits reader اختلالاًderangement
وتُورِثُ عقلَ قارئها اختلالاً
لذاكfor that reason دعوتهاI called it باسمby the name الجنانِal-Jinan (gardens, with a pun on madness)
لذاك دعوتها باسم الجنانِ
And brings derangement to its reader's mind;
Thus I call it the Paradise of Insanity
For that I called it al-Jinan.
