    By God, no stranger knows,

nor a next-door neighbor, which of your two days is more generous:

is it the day you find prosperous,

and so give freely of yourself, or the day you are hard-pressed?

And indeed, your two close friends—generosity and bounty—

abide in kindness as long as you live.

They abide, neither leaving you because of hardship

brought by time, until both are lost when you are lost.
