And my longing was awakened, after I had been asleep,
And Shauqi was awoken after I had been asleep
by a bird calling at midmorning, enamored of song.
By the warbling of the dawn, yearning and humming

Adorned with a neck-ring that had not been purchased
An innocent necklace that came without evil
with money, nor had she been charged a dirham's fee for it.
For money and was not mortgaged for a few dirhams
اِموتُI die لِمَبكاهاat her weeping اسىin grief انindeed لَوعَتيmy anguish
وَوجديand my yearning بِسُعدىfor Su'da شَجوهits sorrow غيرnot منجمabating
I die of grief at her weeping; indeed, my anguish
I die from her weeping, miserable that my agony
and my yearning for Su'da are sorrow that never abates.
And ecstasy found in my joy pitiful lyrics

She wept her sorrow beneath the darkness, and there flowed
She wept her agony under the darkness so the
toward her torrents of tears through every tear-channel.
Trickling tears converged onto her every temple
فَلَوso if قَبلَbefore مَبكاهاher weeping بَكيتI had wept صَبابَةardent longing
بِسُعدىfor Su'da شَفيتI would have healed النَفسَthe soul قَبلbefore التَندمregret
So, had I wept with longing before her weeping,
Had I met her weeping I would’ve cried youthfully
for Su'da, I would have healed my soul before regret.
In my joy healed my soul before regret
وَلكِنand yet بَكتshe wept قَبليbefore me فَهيجَso roused ليin me البكاweeping

But she wept before me, and my weeping was roused
But she cried before me so her weeping roused
by her weeping; so I said, 'The merit belongs to the remorseful.'
My weeping, so I said virtue is for the regretful
