هتوف الضُحى هاجَت حماماً فَغَرَّدا
And a dove’s lament has stirred me to longing.
Loud-voiced in the forenoon, she roused doves, and they sang.

Plaintive, she set out from where she had spent the night, going early,
with her wailing, to a supple tamarisk bough.

Upon it she sang, full of sorrow, her notes resounding,
with a voice that stirs longing in the love-stricken captive.
