The drums! The drums! We have triumphed!

So rest the spears worn thin by thrusting.

My dream came true; command of my people returned to me,

And mine are the scepter and sovereign power.

We have won! Beat the drums and march

In a procession watched by Time.

The procession of those sworn to win justice

By the sword's edge, or perish to the last.

    تُلاقيكُمُ عليه الحِسانُ

    The victors' procession—this is love's procession;

Along it, fair women come to meet you.

O lovely women, crown with flowers and tenderness

Men who never faltered in war.

Kiss me, O mistress of beauty; I am

Obedient and submissive in love's battle.

And passion's blaze burns ever fiercer

Within my ribs, and my heartbeat quickens.

That arrow of love has mortally struck my heart,

And fires spread through its very core.

Kiss me again—thus love grows sweet:

A meeting, then a kiss and an embrace.

Kiss me—no, no, enough! Woe to you! What is this?

Is it the beloved's mouth, or a serpent?

Kisses like the agony of death,

And in their taste are death's many hues.

Draw back your blazing mouth—may you be cursed

By God, a mouth no ghouls have ever possessed!

    I am alone—is this a dream, I wonder?

Ah, no! What I see is waking reality.

    Here, here—she did kiss me.

Here is the scepter—no, a spearhead,

Piercing my entrails; the shot was well aimed

By my enemy, and my peers betrayed me.

Had that thrust come at me from the front,

The spearman would have fallen in awe of me.

We have been routed; my comrades fled, and

The dream has left me; the pillars lie shattered.

Woe to the dream I believed! Behold, the crown

Falls, and the shrouds come forth.

My hopes were false. Come, Death, make haste!

I will not accept a life of humiliation.

I say, as a dove laments beside me:

O my neighbor, do you feel my plight?

Love protect you! May you never taste parting's night assault,

Nor may sorrows ever cross your mind.

O my neighbor, Time has not dealt fairly between us.

Come, let me share sorrows with you; come.

Can a slain man laugh while a free bird weeps,

And the sorrowful stay silent while the carefree lament?

My eye had greater right to tears than yours,

But my tears are precious in calamity.

Come, see the frail soul within me,

Fluttering within a tormented, wasted body.

O vulture, who has come seeking

Your prey, what feasts do you await?

Wait a little: some life still remains in me,

Toward which Death reaches a hand, but it resists.

Take your time and pardon me, for you are hungry,

And one like you, winged one, would forgive.

You came to us seeking food and hospitality:

Welcome, then, a guest who comes to us and is not driven off.

    وأنتَ به يا جائعَ الجَوِّ أَجدَرُ

    Here, vulture, take my torn body, what remains of it;

You, hungry one of the sky, have the better claim to it.

So tear it apart, show no mercy: you are no blood enemy

Seeking vengeance on me now that fate has struck.

Others tore it apart before you: my brothers,

My cousins, and the enemy baring his teeth.

    عليه سلامُ اللَهِ كم كان يَصبِرُ

    And free a heart that melted in the prison of my ribs;

God's peace be upon it—how much it endured!

    Gently, angel of death, gently!

If you suffered what I suffer,

You would turn your face from one struck down,

Cast into the pools of despair.

    Long have you waited nearby,

Seeking payment of a debt now due.

    Who can delay or bargain

    When Death demands his due?

So here is my soul for you; it is

Indeed a trust, not meant to remain.

Take it, bleeding, to the Creator,

    And say how wretched was

A soul gasping within a body

That subjected it to captivity and slavery.

    O soul, do not hurry,

For you are mine while my heart still beats.

Wait, angel of death, do not

Be angry, for parting is hard:

A parting without hope of reunion,

And a journey growing ever more distant.

    Let me, with farewell, refresh

The scorched remnant of life within my breast.

Let me turn my gaze about,

Taking delight in west and east,

And bid the distant horizon farewell,

For I shall see no horizon again.

    Where are the alluring hopes

That won the race against Time?

Where are the horsemen and armored champions?

How is it they have fled, while I remain?

    Alas, my companions betrayed me,

And they had sworn their oaths in earnest!

Where are the beauties who so often

Revealed their passion and love to me?

They turned away from me after

Bowing their necks to me in love.

And they clothed me, after the robe of

    Union, in betrayal's threadbare robe.

    Hush, O tongue, revealing

My weakness—may no throat ever harbor you!

If life has turned away from me,

Then I have a right in death.

Hasten, angel of death; do not

Be gentle, for I have no need of gentleness.

    أَفيكَهُ لأنالَ عِتقا

    And take it—this is the price of life;

I pay it to you to gain release.

    كلُّ الأنامِ إلى ذَهابِ

    My little daughter, do not despair;

    All mortals must depart.

    Lament me with burning grief,

Between your curtain and your veil.

    Say, when you call me

And I cannot return an answer:

The ornament of youth, Abu Firas,

Was not granted the enjoyment of youth.

O Death, O king of life,

    And prince of all beings,

    O scatterer of every gathering,

And gatherer of all that is scattered,

Stretch out your hands and free

The soul from these mortal remains.

    سالت على حَدِّ الظُباتِ

    Take it to yourself, defiant;

It has flowed upon the edges of blades.

Life's pain, to one who lives,

Is harsher than the pain of death.

Give, give me my final right,

For that is among the finest gifts.

I was indeed in bondage, yet did not

Understand; now my deliverance is at hand.

I see the light of immortality

    Shining in every direction.

So extinguish my lamp, and lower

The final curtain over my life.
