    Palestine, from a fettered exile,

we watch you in your engulfing distress.

So our chests rise and fall,

and we yearn, our eyes cast down.

And from beyond this distant ocean,

we salute you with a searing tear.

Your struggle struck fire from the flints of souls,

    so their spark flew, flashing.

A struggle with which you filled East and West,

so the oppressive power was hard-pressed by it.

And you inscribed its wonders in eternity,

with the extinguished lives of your sons.

Palestine, how many a sleepless soul among us—

with but part of the calamity keeping him awake—

yearns for the field of glory in you,

yet the cord of separation has bound him.

So evening finds him with rebellion in his heart,

and morning finds his eye brimming with tears.

    And wounded honor weeps,

    and hopes grieve, worn threadbare,

for the tears of the orphan and the orphan's mother,

and for chests stifled at the noose.

    Beware of tears, O guardians,

for in their depths lies the pyre's thirst.

And were your fleet to encounter the tears,

we would fear that the tears might drown it.

Sons of the mistress of the sea, you have wronged us,

and once the sea lay within our girdle.

Did you free us to enslave us?

Does he who freed a slave take him as a pledge?

You broke the pledges of noble loyalty,

for a promise Balfour had fabricated.

So, by God, what hypocrisy in your love,

and what fraud in Balfour's promise!

    You slaughtered Palestine—alas for us!

You threw open her sanctuary to mercenaries.

    Were their promises wisdom,

    and were our promises heresy?

Come, then, gather from her soil the shards

    of the stained, worn-out blades,

and say, 'With them we have defeated the weak one,

    and trampled his unsettling truth.'

Sons of the mistress of the sea, do not be haughty.

Ask Time; it will tell you with certainty:

if the universe looks at us askance,

then our eyes know well how to stare back.

And if oppression seeks our humiliation,

then woe to the humiliator—and how foolish he is!

Palestine, you brought our days back to life,

and a glory once ours—how lofty it was!

And you walked to the altar of sacrifices,

    to buy redemption from ruin.

And with blood, life's crimson essence,

you watered the soil with a brimming draught.

    Ah, your blood, poured forth,

as a ransom for our spilled glories!

    Palestine, onward to the gallows!

    Palestine, upward onto the pyre!

And die, Palestine, for death is glory,

as a ransom for unfettered freedom.
