Oh, has this pen written nothing

But laments of sorrow and pain?

O my pen, drinking the wine of sorrow

And making the page hear the screech of vengeance,

From which branch did the trimmer cut you?

From which cloud have the steady rains watered you?

Were you shaped in the crows' domain, or

Among their inner wing feathers did you grow used to darkness?

You grew up cawing; no wonder, then, that

You think cawing is the whole of music.

Or were you a stalk beside a swamp,

Part of a plant that sucks up the water of decaying remains?

Or did you live in a forest shade where

The sun has not shone since time immemorial?

So pour upon the white some blackness

That sears the pages like burning coals.

    ذاكَ سُويداءُ الحَشا يا قَلم

    What you spit forth in anger is not ink;

That is the black core of the heart, O pen.
