I lay sleepless while the carefree slept, and there came to me

with the night a sorrow aching in my heart.

And remembering Malik stirred sorrow in me,

so I passed the night with my heart gripped by dread.

Whenever I held back one tear after another,

it refused restraint, and a tear and tears burst forth,

at the memory of a loved one, whom I recalled after a quiet stretch of night,

when the time had come for the last stars to rise.

Whenever my eyes ceased weeping, I was reminded of him by

doves calling to one another, perched among the branches.

They called to Hadil, and I burned with grief for Malik,

and in my breast were fissures from grief for him.

As though I had never sat with him, nor spent a night

seeing him, nor had we ever greeted morning together.

A young man who never lived a day under reproach, and always

around him were dwellings of those who sought his bounty.

He has a following; people know full well that he

is summer rain and spring rain for whoever draws near.
