The young men of Amr have surely learned that I

Guard all that is mine to defend through the longest months.

And if a matter slips away, they put me forward, and I pursue it,

To repel assailants amid one of the upheavals.

And I turn back the [unclear: kaysh] from desire's paths,

And afterward my spear returns sated, having drunk its fill.

Whoever may be weak of hand, I, for my part,

When she bares her fang, am no laggard.

And on the day of Nahawand I sang and offered no protection,

And all the tribes had done well against them.

On the evening when al-Fayruzan fled, seeking refuge

Toward Mount Ab, fearing the foot soldiers.

Then a man of battle and bounty from among us overtook him,

And hurled him down amid the crowding of laden beasts.

And their remains lie in [unclear: wa'y Khurd],

Their souls are the dusky, loping wolves.

And every day against Persia we undertook

Butting and gouging with full-grown horns.
